The TPS What's New Page keeps you posted on all kinds of new happenings in the industry and at TPS.
I have arranged a discount for TPS members, and readers of the newsletter on AtLarge products. AtLarge is a small, privately owned supplement company that sells only the highest quality products.
Chris, the owner, has agreed to offer TPS members a 10% discount on all of his products. Click the picture to visit his site and enter the code TPS at checkout to get 10% off.
As many readers may know, I have been using Kiefer's Carbohydrate Back Loading protocol (down over 30 pounds of body fat in 12 weeks), and I have begun implementing it with my nutrition clients with great success. This plan is simply the easiest and most effective method that I have ever seen for gaining muscle and controlling body fat in my life. The main drawback with it is that Kiefer suggests specific blends of protein at certain times for maximum effectiveness.
I have been using the blend that he suggests and it tastes HORRIBLE. No, I won't tell you the name of the company because I don't want to give them any bad press. It is a very high quality product and has the exact ratios that Kiefer recommends, but I can't use it. It's gross.
AtLarge sells a blend that is very close and is recommended on the Dangerously Hardcore (Kiefer's) forum. It is called Nitrean +. Nitrean + tastes great.
If you want to Back Load and use a product that is awesome, I suggest Nitrean +. AtLArge sells a slew of other products, all of the best quality. Save 10% on them by entering TPS at checkout.
This is not an affiliate link, TPS makes no money by referring you. We simply want our clients to have access to the best products at the best prices

UPDATE:
Eric "Cookie Monster" Dawson of TPS just won his strongman pro card. Congratulations Eric.
Four weeks left.
As I sit down to write the newsletter this month, I realize nothing I can say will really matter right now. As you all know, Boston was hit by a terrorist attack on Marathon Monday and what I write is not nearly as important as what happened.
As you all know, or not, I am fiercely patriotic and have a pride in the USA that is worn on my sleeve, almost literally (it’s on my leg). With that said, terrorism has always been something that happens elsewhere. 9/11 struck me as much as anyone, but this is worse. It happened in MY town, in YOUR town and I am furious. I’m not furious at the Boston PD or the other agencies given the almost insurmountable task of securing an un-securable place. I’m furious with the rest of the world.
There are people all over the world in many countries who live to spread misery and hate. Why? Why can’t they just live their lives and try and treat people the way they are treated, maybe a little better? Why do they want to kill CHILDREN and innocent people? What good did killing 8 year old Martin William Richard do to further their cause? What good did maiming and killing others do to further their cause. None. It makes the rest of the world see what cowards they truly are.
My son will be 8 this month and I cannot fathom what the family is going through right now. I wish that there was a rewind button on time so they could have RUN as far away as possible before the bomb hit, or stayed home altogether. I wish there was a rewind button so that this could have been stopped before it happened. Sadly this is life and there is no button.
The only thing these cowards did was to UNITE Boston and the rest of America, and much of the world again. The New York Yankees fans sang Sweet Caroline at a baseball game. How’s that for furthering your cause you pussies?
Now is the time to realize that we are all one, United States of America and we are BETTER than them. Now is the time for us to come together and stay together as a nation.
Without getting political, I am one of President Obama’s fiercest critics, yet I felt that the speech he gave in Boston was what a leader does and he did it well. I can put my politics aside and see the good he did in this instance. Let’s hope that the President and the rest of the government does what needs to be done with these savages and sends a message to the rest of the world. Terrorism will not be tolerated here and hopefully anywhere from now on. Let’s hope that the death of Martin William Richard, and that of all the others and the inured will not be in vain.
I’d also like to take a moment to thank those who do a thankless job and do not hear enough about the GOOD that they do every day, the Police. We owe them a huge debt for what they do every time they go to work, and they all showed incredible courage and dedication in the capture of these savages. Thanks!
On to the fitness part of the newsletter: I’m not really thinking well now and writing is tough so I apologize for the short newsletter this month. Last month I talked about having 8 weeks left to get in the best shape of your life. Have you done anything to get there? I have.
There are now 4 weeks before the start of shorts season and cookouts and outdoor fun arrives. Will you be in your best shape?
Reread the old newsletters and articles on our site to give yourself a head start. Set a goal, create a plan, ask for help if you don’t know what to do. I’ll even do it myself. Go to EliteFTS, select Murph from the Author box and I’ll answer it as soon as I can. It’s free.
You have no excuse now. Get after it.

Charity Boot Camp
On Saturday May 11, 2013 at 11:30 a.m., TPS is hosting another Charity Boot Camp. This time we will be raising money for the family of Pablo Zapata. Pablo was a fifth grader at the McKinley School in Revere and a friend of my son’s. He was on vacation a few weeks ago and tragically lost his life in a car accident.
Everyone who knew Pablo said the same thing; he was a bright and friendly little boy who was a beautiful person. TPS will be donating 100% of all of the funds donated directly to the family to assist in funeral expenses for Pablo.
Please join us on the 11th for an awesome workout for a sad, yet worthwhile cause. If the weather is nice, we will take everyone out to the parking lot for an outdoor workout. Members and non-members are welcome and encouraged. All fitness levels are welcome as well. Donation is $20.00 or more if you would like. it.

Boxing Lockdown
TPS will be announcing new rules very soon as to how members will be able to access the boxing gym on the second floor. About 99% of our members are AWESOME, but we have a few that we want to identify that are not. They include the ones who have broken onto lockers and stolen from other members. They also include the ones who are stealing and vandalizing the boxing area.
Over the past few months, we have had some equipment stolen and the area damaged as well as having Coach Eddie’s office broken into. We do not want to make changes but we need to make sure the gym is safe and up to our standards.
We will announce the new rules for you soon. Thanks you for your understanding in this matter. With your attention, maybe we can find the less than desirable members who are trying to ruin your experience here at TPS. Providing our members with the best gym experience is the higest priority here at TPS and getting rid of people who suck will help. I’m sorry this will affect the 99% of the AWESOME members who use the boxing are responsibly.
New Equipment Coming In
As you read this you have probably noticed that we have gotten in some new equipment and are in the process of repairing the cardio equipment that is not functioning properly. We hope that you see we took your suggestions in the Member Survey and are acting upon them to make your training experience here the best it can be.
We’ve also got the new EliteFTS Erect-A-Rack ordered and it should be here in about 2 weeks. When it is we will make sure that the Boot Camps are held to the personal training section freeing up space on the floor for you to train in a less congested environment.
We also will be announcing our new program; tentatively called “Jacked” once the final format is agreed upon by the Team. Trust me on this you will want to get in on the ground level for this. Jacked will offer you EVERYTHING that TPS is about. Strength, unstoppable endurance, power, speed and mobility will all be delivered to you in what is sure to be the countries BEST group program.
Once you start it you will be hooked. I know I am pumping this up, but I know you will love it. We are taking our exact personal training template that has been refined since 1999 and offering it to you at foolishly low rates in a group setting. It does not matter what your fitness level is, Jacked will be IDEAL for all of you, from those who have never touched a weight to those who have been at it forever.
Jacked will have regressions and progressions to accommodate any fitness or experience level and the group setting will motivate the beginners to set their own bar higher by training alongside the more advanced people. We have identified what made TPS GREAT in our old locations and what is not the best here and are designing a program to bring TPS back to its roots: STRENGTH, CONDITIONING, and COMMUNITY.
Stay tuned to the newsletter and the site for more updates on the launch of the most complete and effective program you have ever seen.
April 2013
Eight weeks left. Did you even read the last newsletter?
You’ve still got time to get in the best shape possible for the summer! I write about goals in January and February and the intent is to get you to set some and achieve them. I know many of you did because I see you in the gym working your programs and getting BETTER. I also know that many of you didn’t because it is human nature. Not everyone is a planner.
Here is the good news, you still have time to make a lot of progress, it is never too late to start. Using the summer as a goal date (June 1st) works for many people because they want to look good at the beach, in shorts, whatever. One of my nutrition clients recently lost an unbelievable 11 pounds/4.5% body fat, gained 7 pounds of lean muscle in only 3 weeks! How? He had a plan. He had a goal.
Of course, he had help with how to set up his plan so he could be successful. TPS is here to help you, our members and readers achieve your goals. Take advantage of all that comes with your membership so, even if you don’t know what to do, we have someone who does that will help you.
Set a goal, create a plan, ask for help if you don’t know what to do. I’ll even do it myself. Go to"ASK ME A QUESTION", and ask me a question, select Murph from the Author box and I’ll answer it as soon as I can. It’s free.
You have no excuse now. Get after it.

Contest News:
Its official, the TPS Mass State Strongman Championships will be held at TPS on August 10, 2013. The entry form is ready and you can get it here.
You can also pay your entry fee online here.
We have a ton of exciting events for you including:
Axle Clean and Press
Deadlift
Ironmind Sandbag Carry
Super Yoke/Prowler Medley
And the crowd favorite Atlas Stones
We are adding a new division this year too. 2013 will be the first time that we have a women’s Novice division. We are seeing a lot of women attend Strongman Saturdays and the NEWS events. We would love to see you jump in the arena and compete. The women’s novice class will not be split by weight, it is just one class.
As usual, we need a lot of help to put this on. WE are asking any TPS members or newsletter readers if they can volunteer their time on the day of the show for a hard day’s work for no pay. All of your help allows us to raise as much money as we can for the Chelsea Soldiers Home, our charity of choice.
We’ll have much more information soon on the show.
RPS meet:
TPS and RPS are hosting the first ever TPS powerlifting meet coming this October 12th&13th. This meet will be held at the Everett Recreation Center on Elm Street in Everett. If you have never competed in a meet, this is a great opportunity for a few reasons:
It is local and you hardly ever see a powerlifting meet in Boston
RPS meets are well run and fun
You’ll know a bunch of people there from the gym
It’s fun
If you have done a meet before, but not one of Gene’s meets you are missing out. Gene has some of the best meets I have ever been to. They are well run, efficient and there are a lot of great people there. Give RPS a shot.
Get your entry form here.
New Equipment Coming In
In an effort to keep TPS the best, we are in the process of upgrading some of our equipment. I’m really excited about some of it and not so much about the other.
We have 8 new treadmills coming in and a new step mill too. Our treadmills are looking kind of beat and they are starting to break down, like the step mill did. Rather that repair them, we are getting newer ones. This is what I am not so excited about. I’d rather take all of it out and put more turf down with Prowlers, but steady state cardio is why a lot of people come here so we must do it. You can’t be the best with crappy equipment.
What I am excited about is the new EliteFTS Erect-A-Rack that is on order. We are having it CUSTOM made to our specifications. This new rack will allow us to run our camps and semi-private training groups much more efficiently and also keep them in the personal training area. This frees up space on the gym floor for everyone else.

It will also allow us to implement a new program we are working on that will be announced soon. I think you all will love this and it will fill fast. Our secret code name for it is “Jacked”. That’s all I can tell you about it now. With a name like Jacked, the ultimate power rack and the best team of coaches, you know it is going to be good.
Julia’s E Book

My good friend Julia Ladewski who was just here for the Big Seminar 2 has released an e-book, So You Want To Be A Strength Coach. I read it, I love it. You should read it. You’ll love it too.
The FDA Is At It Again
It seems that the government screws things up all the time and does things that are not in your best interest. I am not going to get political here but I have come across something that should be all over the news.
You can read about it and take action here.
Master the Bench Press at TPS:
Unfortunately the Master the Bench Press series of clinics with Vincent Dizenzo has to be put on hold for the time being. Vincent’s schedule is so full that he is not able to commit to these at this time. We do plan on continuing these in the future as Vincent’s schedule allows.
Anyone that has pre-paid for the sessions will receive a refund if they would like, OR we can keep the money on account for you until the clinics resume. Please let us know what you would like to do.

Strong and Sexy with Molly Galbraith
OK, we all know February is the shortest month, but this year was ridiculous. I have been busier than a one armed paper hanger and didn’t have a lot of time to get you as much new content for the newsletter as I had hoped.
Don’t worry; we’ve still got some great stuff in here, like Molly’s column, Strong and Sexy. She has some protein shake recipes this month that sound unbelievable. We’ve also got some things I hope you are interested in. Please reply back to the newsletter if you have any questions you want answered or any specific information on training, nutrition, fat loss, etcetera. I am happy to answer them and it makes the newsletter better because we are writing what YOU, our readers want to know about.
I’m also interested in how we can help you with our Exercise of the Month videos. Is there something you would love to know how to do properly that we have not covered yet? Let me know.
Since February is over, that means that March is here and that means that the warm weather is only about 12 weeks away. How is your fitness/physique/health progress going since January’s resolutions? 12 weeks is enough time to make a huge change if you are not where you want to be. TPS is here as always to help pour members and readers. One thing that you can do right now is to attend the Big Seminar 2 coming in a few days. Read more about that in this newsletter.
Another thing that you can do is to make going to the gym a habit. It’s a good one to get into. If you don’t know what to do, take some of our free classes to get started. Find a good training program, like 531 to follow. Just find a program and stick to it. We sent you a bunch of FREE and proven workouts to follow in the Fat Loss Roadmap v.2 in January. I urge you to try them out. They work.
Get in gear over the next 12 weeks and make some big changes.
Oh and one more thing, TPS was just voted Best of 2013 in the latest issue of Women’s Health magazine. I’d like to take a moment and thank all of my Team members and our members for making this possible. TPS keeps getting recognition as the best. We will do everything that we can to continue to improve our services and stay the best.
Good luck,
Murph

Personal Security
I am sad to say that TPS has had a small rash of property theft this past week. There is a thief or thieves breaking into lockers in the men’s locker room and also taking keys to members cars from the key basket at the front desk.
We are aware of this and will do everything that we can to stop it. Unfortunately there is not a lot that we can do. The best thing that we could do is put a camera in the locker room, but that’s against the law so we are asking you to be extra vigilant. Please do not store any valuable items in your locker and always use a lock. We have a section of blue lockers between the men’s and ladies room in the hallway. I think that is the best place to lock up things like wallets and valuables. It is much less likely that those lockers will be broken into.
We are increasing how often staff goes into the locker rooms to check out what is going on and we hope that the simple fact that the scumbags that are doing this are aware of this will cause them to leave TPS and never return. We have been in business since 1999 and we have never had issues like this. Our members have always been honest and a community. The person or persons doing this are not true members. TPS members look out for each other and we ask you to do that now. If you see something shady going on in the locker room, let a staff member know. Do not approach the thief, let us handle it. We will notify the police and prosecute them.
We also have removed the key box from the Front Desk. I have never been a fan of having it there because there are people that go into gyms all over the country, grab a set of keys and then go in the parking lot and unlock the car. They steal from the cars, steal the cars and also have been known to break into homes with the keys.
One of the recent incidents involved a local firefighter. Whoever is committing these crimes is about as big of a maggot scumbag as you can get. He stole the keys from the firefighter’s locker. He knew it was a firefighter because of the fire uniform that was in there. He then went downstairs and used the keys to steal from an official marked Fire department vehicle. What a piece of human filth. If you did this and are reading this, you are going to get caught and I hope the guy whose car you broke into catches you. You are a world class piece of shit.
I try to be aware of security issues affecting this industry and I heard a brand new one today. Thieves are now using some type of scanner to steal from cars. They hold the scanner to the car and it signals them if there are any types of consumer electronics in the vehicle (iPods, laptops, etc). These people will anything they can to steal from you instead of getting job. Take a few extra minutes and be aware of your surroundings and the people in them. If you see something that doesn’t look right let us know! WE will do all that we can’t prevent this but we need your help.
I apologize for this and again, we will do everything that we can to catch this and prevent it from happening.
Trottier Charity Boot Camp
TPS ran the Trottier Charity Boot Camp last week and we had an awesome day. We were able to raise over $600.00 that is going directly to the family for medical/housing expenses. I would like to thank all of my Team that donated their time and all of the members who participated. We even had members that could not attend donate money.
We will be doing more of these charity events in the future and we hope that you will join us.
Referral Contest

February 2013
TPS to run benefit boot camp for Jack Trottier
Jack Trottier is the star quarterback of the Tyngsboro High School football team, who led the team to a 10 and 2 season last year and was a strong player on the lacrosse team, as well. In mid-January he was seriously hurt while snowboarding, and is currently paralyzed from his chest down.
His family has appealed for support as they explore options for the best possible care to get Jack on his feet again. More about Jack’s story. The family cannot afford the cost of his travel and medical care to a rehab center in Atlanta.
TPS is pitching in to help by running the Trottier Charity Boot Camp and donating 100% of the proceeds for Jack’s care. The camp will start at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 23, at TPS’s location at 68 Vine Street in Everett.
The boot camp will be open to the public and the cost is $20.00
The event will be targeted for anyone interested in getting fit while having fun and will feature:
Innovative exercises using your body as resistance
-The area’s best certified coaches including CJ Murphy and his team
-Those new to exercise are encouraged to attend as well as those who are experienced.
You can register online here or the day of at the door.
This one-time event is open to TPS members as well as the general public, so bring a friend for a great cause! NEW ARTICLES:
For the old guys-injury prevention/rehab
We are officially one month into 2013. The gym is jammed and it looks like this year, people are a little more serious about getting fit. As someone who is a lifelong fan of strength and health, this makes me happy.
It is common in this industry to get inundated with less than serious people in January. They come in, wander around and don’t make any progress. At TPS it seems like we are not seeing a lot of that. We are seeing more of you signing up for camps and training, or following a program on your own. Sure, we have had some of the regular New Year’s crowd gawking around and looking confused. When we see that, we try and guide those people in the right direction.
I wonder a lot what has gotten people to realize that what the mainstream media tells them about health and fitness is usually inadequate at best. Is it the amount of information on the internet? Have they tried all the other stuff and failed? Is it that they read these newsletters and realize we are right or is it something else?
I honestly can’t answer that question but I do know that TPS is dedicated to helping you make your goals a reality. We will continue to give you as much FREE information as we can in the newsletter and on the site. We will also do everything we can to make training affordable so you can get the coaching that you want so that you can be the best you ever have in 2013.
Please read on in the newsletter for more of the tips you are most interested in. I have asked a few times for you to email with the things you would like us to cover, and I have reviewed the articles with the most “clicks”. We will use that information to give you more content that you are most interested in hearing about. If you have something that you would like to know more about, please let us know. We are here to help you, our readers and clients.
Have a great 2013 and keep working towards your goals,
Master the bench press at TPS:
We have to postpone the February 2nd Bench Clinic with Vincent due to a last minute schedule change. Vincent is being called away for a personal matter that weekend and we apologize for the need to reschedule. We are waiting for a new date from him and will let you know as soon as we get it.
New Product
Spud is at it again. He sent us an awesome new tool for the dedicated athlete and the trainer who works in a “regular” gym; the new SpudInc. Sled.
Spud sent me a box with a sled made of the bulletproof material that he makes all of his straps from. At first I thought, why? After taking it out and actually using it I loved it.
Many of you know the benefits of using a sled in your training, and many of you use them here at TPS all the time. Sleds are great for a wide variety of things from conditioning, to rehab and warmup to building strength. They are one of the most versatile tools that we have. The problem with them is that they are heavy and bulky to carry around. This is especially true for trainers that work in fancy, schmancy gyms where they don’t allow chalk and TPS style training. Can you imagine what the manager of a big box gym would say if you took out a steel sled and started dragging it around on the very expensive flooring at your local $90.00 a month gym?
What about the people that like to get outside at the park and do some work? They do not want to lug around a 65 pound steel sled, and it probably won’t fit in most people’s cars anyway. What about the sports coaches who want their teams to use them at practice? Let’s face it, steel sleds take up a lot of room and are not very convenient to transport, even for short distances.
Spud, a true man of leisure has the answer. A sled made of strong, yet lightweight nylon. It weighs just a few pounds, but does all of the same things that a steel sled does. It also rolls up into a small package and will fit in a gym bag.
I got a pre-production model and tested the crap out of it. I gave Spud a few ideas on how to improve it and you will see those in the production ones available for sale very soon. The production models will be easy to load and will hold the plates on very securely with a strap.
If you have wanted to get yourself a sled and use it at your high end gym, with your clients, your athletes or at the park, this sled is for you. It is lightweight, easily transportable, hold s a bunch of weight and is almost indestructible. We will have them on the TPS site as soon as they are available. If you want to give it a try, there is one on the turf at TPS right now!
Seminar News:
Big Seminar 2
OK, it is getting close to crunch time. If you are interested in attending the Big Seminar 2 in March, I suggest that you register. We are going to sell out on this one and I hate to sound like the pushy sales guy with the polyester suit telling you to buy now, but you should. The presenters I have assembled are first class. The fee is worth it to hear one just of them (except Rhodes-he’s good for half)!
Seriously though, we have a panel of speakers that are world class coaches and athletes in one room for two whole days. You will get to listen to their presentation and then ask them questions. This is where all the little things in your training or your work if you are a coach, will click. I can’t tell you how much I have learned over the years by attending seminars just like I am suggesting that you do. I present at seminars now and I make it a point to listen to the other speakers because I always learn something. I have been in this business along time and if I am still learning new things, you are guaranteed to learn a lot. I mean that in the most sincere way, not in a “know it all” way at all.
Attending a seminar is one of the best investments that you can make in your training; it doesn’t matter if you are new or have been around for a while. You will learn and take things away from this that will make you a better athlete or coach.
I just go an update on topics from Molly and Julia. They will be giving a presentation on "Defeating the Magazine Mentality: From Treadmill to Training". The ladies will discuss how to overcome all of the bad information that women receive from the media and the guru’s on how to get strong and fit. There will be 2 segments to their presentation, each with a Q&A section at the end. I believe this will be one of the best lectures on this topic and will really open your eyes. For all of the women who train at TPS (or another gym) you should attend the Big Seminar for this lecture alone, never mind all of the others and the second day of hands on coaching.
For a full lineup of the details visit our Upcoming Seminars page.

January 1st saw a huge number of new campers come to TPS to get fit for the New Year. It’s not too late for you to begin. We also follow a program that condenses as much work into as little time as possible. Don’t worry if you are new to training. We have a special group in the camp for beginners.
Women’s Fitcamp is for the ladies only and focuses on getting you stronger, leaner and happier about yourself in short order. Phil and the rest of the coaches will have you performing the best strength training exercises and conditioning routines to get you the body you want. Fitcamp is ideal for women looking to train in a fun and supportive environment designed to boost your metabolism and build lean muscle while having fun.
Awesome Camp is for the guys. Guys always want to be more awesome, and Steve, our arguably, most awesome guy will show you how to get more awesome.
Awesome Camp focuses on the basic barbell lifts, bench press, squat and deadlift with just the right mix of assistance exercises and conditioning designed to get you stronger, bigger, leaner and more AWESOME! Add pounds to your bench press and inches to your beach muscles (and more) with Steve.
Olympic Lifting Camp is our hidden jewel. The Olympic lifts are making a huge comeback, and sadly, they are frequently taught by less than experienced coaches. Not at TPS.
If you want to learn the Snatch, Clean and Jerk and all of the best assistance lifts designed to get you faster, stronger and more athletic; Olympic Camp is just what you need.
Lastly, 531 Training Group is our three day per week offering; all other camps are twice a week. 531 is a training system that has taken the world by storm and was created by Jim Wendler. Jim is somewhat of a training genius and he created the simplest and most effective training system ever devised (according to him). I agree with him that it is mind numbingly simple and brutally effective. So much so that I called him and asked permission to use the name. He agreed, and TPS is the only officially authorized 531 training program.
531 is based around the bench press, squat, deadlift and press and will get you strong, in shape and CONSTANTLY progressing. No more hitting plateaus in your workouts. 531 has it all down to a science. Our coaches know the system inside and out and will teach it to you. If you want to get stronger, be good at the basics lifts and never stop making progress, 531 is for you.
As you can see, TPS has a camp that is right for you. They are beginning soon so register today! You’ve got nothing to lose but pounds, inches and body fat.

January 2013:
New Articles:
How to Stay Slim Through the Holidays
Another year is in the books. The beginning of 2013 marks another year for TPS. We have been around for 14 years now. Holy crap! 14 years. We even have some of our original members here at our newest location. As I do each January, I’d like to thank each and every member and all of my team for making us the Best Gym in Boston!
Without you, our members, we are nothing. There would be no TPS. TPS has some of the hardest working and most dedicated members of any gym that I have ever seen. I urge you to keep it up in 2013 and beyond. I wish you all of the success in the world on your fitness journey and we will be here to help you every step of the way.
Without my team, TPS would not be here either. TPS has a team of the best and most dedicated people I have ever seen. No one works here because they have to. My Team WANTS to work here and it shows. They take pride in what they do and they are also here to help you.
I’ve got a lot of news and some great New Years’ tips for you in this issue of the newsletter. Please read it all and forward it to someone you think might be helped by the information.
I also want to improve the content of our newsletter. I urge you to shoot me an email and let me know what topics you would like more information on. We can write about strength, fat loss, boxing tips or any fitness questions you need answered. Let me know how we can make the newsletter more informative on the topics that you want to know about.
Referral Contest
Danielle Ngyuen won our last member referral contest and scored and AWESOME 4th generation iPod touch. Who will be the next winner? I hope it is you because I am not eligible.

For our January contest, TPS will be giving away a Kindle Fire HD to the member who refers the most new members to TPS in the month of January. To qualify, referrals must be for a 6 month EFT, OR a 1-Year Paid-In-Full membership.
Don’t forget, you win in two ways! For each member you refer, we credit your account with a free month PLUS you could win a Kindle Fire HD!
We’ll announce the winner in February.

Great Question
I just got a great question about my last series of emails I sent out to you. The question was “What kind of food would be best to eat/drink after morning fasted cardio?” and was sent in by Tina.
Here is a simple answer: Have a cup of coffee with 2 tablespoons of full-fat coconut milk and about 12-15 grams of whey isolate. About 2-3 hours later, eat a meal consisting of protein and healthy fat. Try a few scrambled egg whites, a whole egg, a bunch of veggies and a tablespoon of olive oil.
Skip the carbs. This will keep your body burning fat for a longer amount of time. For more info on burning fat all day and building muscle, read Carbohydrate Back Loading.
Seminar News:
Big Seminar 2
EARLY REGISTRATION PRICE ENDS SOON!
OK, it’s getting closer and it’s time to register for this weekend of incredible awesomeness. On March 9&10, 2013, TPS is bringing you the best names in the Strength and Conditioning field today for a weekend of lecture and hands-on coaching. We have done these in the past and all of our attendees were blown away!
We also have a change to the lineup. Due to professional and personal commitments, Harry Selkow cannot make it to this seminar. Harry apologizes for this, and we will see if we can get him out to TPS later on. I’m in the process of lining up a new speaker to replace him but do not know if we have time to book someone.
Even without Harry, by attending you will still get two full days of practical knowledge from some go the best coaches who actually work in the field, not INTERNET GURUS who write articles. Our team is the BEST, most of them are on the prestigious Q&A staff in addition to working with athletes/lifters every day.
We are bringing you:
Julia Ladewski
Molly Galbraith
Vincent Dizenzo
Matt Rhodes
Dave Kircshen
C.J. Murphy
Each coach will speak on Saturday and host a station on Sunday. At each station you will learn and perform specific exercises. Our coaches will teach you the tips and tricks the pros use to coach effectively. We will cover all the basic lifts and some other very cool, yet effective stuff.
We already have people registered and we anticipate that this will sell out quickly, so don’t wait to register. Seating is limited. We want to ensure that all attendees get individual attention.
Early registration price is only $299.00 and ENDS January 15th!

Top 4 Training Mistakes Most Females Make
First off this month I would like to wish everyone Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. I hope you all have the best holiday season ever and that Santa is good to all of the TPS members. Next, I’d like to let you know that we have been working furiously to improve TPS and make it the best it has ever been.
Since we won “Best of Boston”, I have been somewhat of a lunatic and I want to win it again. We have made a new commitment to bringing you the best environment to train in. TPS is doing this in many ways including CLEANING! It is a huge task to keep a gym as busy and as large as TPS clean, but we are upping our efforts to do so. Being hardcore does not mean being gross or dirty (not that we were). My team has been upping their game and keeping the place tidy.
We are also enforcing the rules more than ever. How does this make the gym better? Well, no one, and I mean no one wants to listen to your cell phone conversation anywhere, but especially at the gym. We take this seriously. When you read industry studies on gyms and customer satisfaction, one huge complaint from members is about other members on the phone. Face it, you are not that important. Even the president can get away from his phone for an hour. Shut up and lift as the t-shirt says.
We are also making sure that everyone puts stuff where it goes when they are done. This is another huge complaint from gym studies, and it’s just bad mojo. If you are strong enough add a plate to a bar or use the dumbells, you are strong enough to put them back. Leave the place better than when you found it. It’s your gym, have pride. Rules are important, gym etiquette is too. Look for an article soon on gym etiquette.
We are always trying to improve our services as well. With Muay Thai gone, we have decided to expand the Boxing program to offer you many more options for training at NO EXTRA COST!
TPS is doing many more things behind the scenes that you will see in the near future to make your membership experience even better every day. We take our commitment to you SERIOUSLY and we want to be Best of Boston every year. Let us know if we can do anything better.
Read on in the newsletter for some more special offerings from TPS for the month of December too.
Merry Christmas once again,
Murph
and

Sports Performance Camp
It’s time to announce the next round of Youth Sports Performance Camps. We have the schedule for Winter through Spring, and we are finalizing the Summer sessions now. Summer dates are subject to change depending on when school gets out.
Keep your child on the path to progress during the season. If your child's sports program does not have a strength and conditioning component, they are only getting half of the results they could be. Registering them in a well-run program is the BEST way to develop them into the athlete that they have the potential to be. Our camps are led by Strength and Conditioning specialist Jamie Smith who has a tremendous amount of experience working with athletes of all levels. Jamie was an assistant strength coach at the University of Connecticut before he arrived at TPS. They have an outstanding program at UCONN and Jamie was a crucial component of it. Jamie takes his experiences there and elsewhere and applies them to our program.
All Camps are 3 days per week from 3:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m. and are priced at $465.00. You can save 10% by registering early for the Winter sessions before December 15th.

How to Choose a Powerlifting Crew by Dave Kirschen
Wow. Next month will mark the two-year anniversary of the move to our new location. Where does the time go? It seems like we just moved in a few weeks ago to me. This thought occurred to me the other day and it makes me realize that time is fleeting. Time is our enemy. We only have so much of it and we all waste it.
How many of you wish that you had more time to do things?
Time to work out, to see your friends, to spend with your kids or whatever you really like to do…
I have a solution for you. Put the smartphone or iPad down. Stop texting nonstop and for god’s sake, get off of Facebook. Think about how much time you WASTE every day doing nothing. Do you really need to be on Facebook for 3 hours and then say that you are tired of being fat? How about wishing that you saw your kids more? The solution is simple. Just do it. Get rid for the things in your life that prevent you from doing what you want. You will have more time. Time to get to the gym and lose the extra body fat that makes you unhappy, time to go to the park with your kids and throw the football or push them on the swing, time to learn how to play guitar or just time actually talking to someone instead of interacting with them over a piece of plastic.
Time is our enemy.
Time is finite.
When your time is up, will you look back and think that you lived each day to the fullest?
Will you wish that you spent more time with your kids? They won’t be kids for long you know. They only look at you like you are the greatest thing in the world for so long. Make the time NOW while they still do to enjoy it and make memories.
Will you look back and wish that you ran that marathon, or skied down that mountain, or made a run for that 1,000 pound squat? I won’t. I have wasted too much of my life on things that do not matter. No more. I am making a run at one of the things that I have always wanted to do since I was a kid, the 1,000 pound squat. I am also spending more time with my son.
I’m not preaching, just sharing something that dawned on me. Think about it, time is running out.

R11A 5K Run-Walk
Many of you may have read about the loss of one of my best friends, Rich Angelo, recently. Many of you knew him and know what a GREAT man he was. In his honor, Rich’s family has set up a 5K run that TPS is PROUD to be a sponsor of, the R11A5K.

On Sunday, November 11, I will be getting out of bed extra early and heading to the race to show my support. The race is to benefit the Rich Angelo Athletic Scholarship Fund at Malden High School. Please join me and all of the athletes participating in the event that is in honor of one of the greatest men I have ever known. I hope to see you there.
Referral Contest
We just ran our very first referral contest at TPS. We gave away prizes to the member who referred the most people to one of our camps, like Total Transformation or Awesome Camp. The winner, Mike Broduer, got a new Kindle Fire HD. We also gave away prizes to the second place winner Roz Puleo.

This month we have another contest for you. You can get more than the prize, too! For the month of November, TPS is going to give away a new iPod Touch to the member who refers the most new members to the gym. To be included, your referral must sign up for a 6-month EFT, or a 1-year paid in full membership between November 1 and November 30, 2012. Whoever refers the most people wins an AWESOME, new iPod Touch.
But wait, you also get a free month for everyone that you refer, so you are winning in 2 ways. Look at it like this: you refer 4 of your friends, you get 4 free months here at TPS, PLUS you might win an iPod Touch.
Who is going to be the next winner?

Huge announcement
TPS is teaming up with Rychlak Power Systems (RPS) to bring you Boston’s best powerlifting meet. This is our first time hosting a powerlifting meet in our history! We have waited because we wanted to bring you the best run meet anywhere.

We are bringing the RPS Power Challenge to Boston in October 2013. I will have full details on the date and location of the meet next month. I couldn’t wait until then to let you all know about it.

Master the bench press at TPS:
We will have the October date for you soon. Vincent’s schedule is JAMMED this month.
If you are not familiar with this clinic, once a month, World Record holder and all around good guy, Vincent Dizenzo comes to TPS to teach a group of 10 people the bench press. Vincent has broken so many records in the bench press that listing them would take five paragraphs. He knows a thing or two about the bench.
Vincent works with raw beginners to elite-level lifters in these clinics. If you are interested in learning how to do things right, this is an opportunity to learn from a master.
For more details or to register, visit Vincent’s page on our site. This will sell out, so don’t wait.

September 2012:
NEW ARTICLES POSTED:
Whew! August is over. While August is a slow month in the gym business it is a busy one for me and the crew at TPS. The Strongman contest takes over the back office for the last two weeks and almost nothing else gets done. That’s why the newsletter is so short this month.
Well, it is past now and we are back to business here. We will be busy working on the schedule for the fall and looking into new times for training groups and maybe more camps!
Oh wait, did I forget to mention that TPS was just named Best Gym in Boston on the Best of Boston list? That’s right. TPS always says we are the best, but now Boston magazine thinks so, too. I am very proud of this accomplishment, more so than winning 20 Best Gyms in America twice.
Why? Because it is great to be known nationally but, for a small business, it is much better to be known locally.
I would like to extend a huge thanks to all of the TeamTPS members who made this possible. Without the dedication and hard work of my staff we would not be where we are today. A few years ago, Dave Tate was being interviewed about EliteFTS.com and they asked how he does it. In a nutshell, he said it is not him that does it. It is his staff. EliteFTS had grown beyond Dave at point.
TPS is very much like them in many ways. It is a small company that one person started with a drive to be the best. The owner did EVERYTHING from paying the bills to cleaning the toilets to serving all of the customers. As the company grows, more people are added to the team. TPS has grown beyond just me. It is a team effort. Without my team, TPS would be nowhere. Thanks to everyone for all of their hard work, and thanks to all of our customers for being loyal and awesome.
"If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in 5 years there'd be a shortage of sand."

Master the bench press at TPS:
Our first bench press clinic with World Champion bench press artist, Vincent Dizenzo, went very well. We had a great group of lifters show up and learn how to add pounds to their bench from Vincent. You can be in the next group!
On Saturday September 22nd, Vincent Dizenzo will be back at TPS coaching lifters in his specialty, the bench press. Vincent will work with beginners, advanced lifters, raw lifters and geared lifters. All he asks is that you show up and work hard. He will bring the best out of you.
I have said frequently that the reason that I know what little I do about strength training is that I sought out the best athletes and coaches in the world to teach me personally how to get better. Now, I bring them here to TPS to teach you. Having the ability to learn hands-on from a master is priceless. Vincent is a master at his discipline. If you are serious about being your best, do not let this opportunity get by you. Vincent benches more than most STRONG men squat; you WILL learn a thing or three from him.
For more details or to register, visit Vincent’s page on our site.
Media Assault
Keep your eye on Men’s Fitness, Murph just wrote a few killer workouts that will be featured in upcoming issues. They will be focused on time efficiency and fat loss. Quick, productive and not boring. What else can you ask for?

NEW ARTICLES UP:
August has arrived and you know what that means! The TPS Strongman contest is this month. You can read more about that later in this issue.
I’d like to talk about organizing your training this month. Do you come into the gym with a plan? Do you train correctly for your goals? If you do have a plan, is it the right plan for you?
Let’s look at planning first. If you don’t have a plan, you are planning to fail. I didn’t make that up, I just paraphrased it, poorly.
Training is no different than anything else. It needs to be planned. How much is up to you. I like to have my plan written out for several weeks with a long term goal in mind. I do not like to write out specifics of my plan too far in advance because things can change. You could find that what you are doing needs to be tweaked, or it does not fit with your schedule or a thousand other things. Writing your training for blocks of 3 to 10 weeks is a good idea. It is not too long that you waste a lot of time in the writing stages and it gives you a good amount of time to just get in the gym and get your work done. Make sure that if you do write your blocks out in short phases that you have a longer-term plan and don’t just jump around doing different things for the sake of variety.
You need a long term goal to be able to do this— it doesn’t matter what it is. Your goal could be to squat 700 pounds or press 30 pound dumbells for 15 reps. It could be to lose 25 pounds of fat or to fit into a pair of jeans 2 sizes smaller. Just have a goal. When you make your plan, set it up for success with small, attainable milestone goals. I have written about goal setting countless times so I won’t get into it here.
Not having a plan for your training or not having a goal, or even having a very vague goal, is the worst way to achieve success. You’ll be the person just wandering around the gym not knowing what to do, or worse, quitting because you did not make any progress.
How about training correctly for your goals? I can’t tell you how many times that I have had a conversation like this and heard it in consultations for clients. Most people do not know how to train to achieve their goals. It is not their fault. This spreads from the general population, to people that read fitness magazines to medical professionals giving fitness advice. Bad training ideas are everywhere.
The media and the medical community have the WORLD convinced that cardio is that best way to achieve all of your goals. I’m here to tell you they are WRONG.
For almost 100% of the population, 100% of the time, strength training is the most important part of reaching their goals. Strength training does not necessarily mean doing the things that strongmen and powerlifters do. It means training in a manner to increase your strength for the goal that you have. I have also written about this many times, but I’ll review it quickly.
Cardiovascular training such as running, using the elliptical or bike, has its place and needs to be included. How much is dependent on your goals. If you want to run a marathon, or do a triathlon, you need a lot of it. If you do not, you don’t need much. When we exercise, we want to burn calories and raise our metabolism so it burns calories for a long time after the workout. Burning calories post workout is called EPOC. Cardiovascular training does neither of these very well.
You can burn the same amount of calories as a 1600 meter run by drinking ice cold water. Cardiovascular training does little to increase EPOC as well. What this means is that when you are running, riding a bike or using the elliptical, as soon as you are done, the “afterburn” pretty much stops. When you strength train correctly the “afterburn” continues for many hours, even days.
For most people, a properly planned strength training program, paired with correct cardiovascular training produces the best results. The results are dictated by the goal and the plan implemented to achieve it.
Don’t worry if you do not know what to do to achieve your goal. That is why we are here. Talk to one of our coaches, set up some training, take a class and learn how to do things right. At TPS, we want you to achieve your goals and we are here to help.
Good luck.

StrongWoman Saturday
On August 4th, TPS and the N.E.W.S. (New England Women of Strength) will be training with Eric Dawson at TPS. If you haven’t heard about N.E.W.S., they are a local group of STRONG ladies who have joined together to form an online community and they asked TPS to host a Strongwoman day just for them. So, on August 4th at 12:00 noon, Eric Dawson will be leading some of the strongest ladies in New England through a training session. This will be run just like Strongman Saturday, except it’s all women.
Events of the day are Super Yoke and Atlas Stones. If you are already familiar with these events and need to fine-tune your skill, this is the perfect opportunity to get better. If you are brand new to this type of training, it is also the perfect opportunity. Get down to TPS and learn how to get STRONGER with a group of like-minded ladies.
Ladies, join us on the 4th!
Held Over! Free E-book from Sean Hyson
My very good friend Sean Hyson, editor at Men’s Fitness has just written a new E -book full of reviews of the most popular training programs in the industry today.
Sean will give you his unbiased opinion on each one. His opinion is an educated one as he has access to the best coaches in the industry and is also an N.S.C.A. certified coach. Did I mention it’s free? He doesn’t even require you to give an email address; just click the link, download and read.
I love free stuff, especially good free stuff. This is great.

New Training Groups Begin This Month
OK, there is a lot of NEW stuff in this section, so much so, that I needed to change a ton of the website! Starting this month we have a new round of Olympic lifting, Total Transformation, Women’s Fitcamps and Awesome camp beginning as well as 2 brand new ones. I have said this before and I’ll say it again: if you want to make optimal progress towards your fitness goals, camps are the most cost effective way to do it.
Let’s face it, personal training is expensive. There is a reason for it, though. A great personal trainer has taken years to develop their skills to give you results. I have used the “doctor” analogy many times before in conversation. A doctor goes to school for about a hundred years and does lengthy internships to be their best. A great personal trainer isn’t too much different than a doctor when you consider the amount of time they have spent perfecting their craft. They have years of commitment and study under their belts to be the best. I’m not saying that we are in the same class as someone with an MD, but I am saying that it takes a long time to be great at something, and all of my coaches are great. Being great comes with a price and that is their fee. A great coach deserves to earn a living from what they do just as anyone else that has spent years perfecting their career skills.
This is why we offer group training. Group training is much less expensive for the people partaking in it. You still get the same level of excellence form the coach, just at a wildly reduced cost to you. In that spirit, we are moving away from one- on-one personal training. We are now offering semi-private personal training, including some new specialized groups in addition to the camps we already offer, at an extremely reduced rate from the on-on-one in group settings.
We will have 2 groups initially: one for 531 and one for extreme fitness. These new groups will meet three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to begin, and will be priced at $465.00 for 8 weeks. That is less than $20.00 per session. Groups will be limited to 5 people per coach to ensure individual attention to all.
The first group has been talked about already and it is the 531 training group. Jim Wender’s 531 training system has taken the world by storm and for good reason. It is simple, effective and it works. 531 is based around the squat, bench press, deadlift, overhead press and power clean. It works off of simple arithmetic. By using percentages of a one-rep max and keeping the work to the minimum amount necessary, you make constant progress. The problem is that many people just don’t know how to do the lifts and they are not sure how to choose assistance work.
TPS’s 531 group is approved by Jim himself. I asked for permission and Jim said that he would be honored to have us be the representatives for a camp using his system and gave us permission to use his 531 name in it. That is high praise from Jim. If you know him, you know what I mean. 531 camps will be run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings to start. They will be priced the same as semi-private personal training. Groups are limited to 5 people per coach just like the semi-private training.
The second new group is also new to TPS, NotCrossfit. WE tried to think of an AWESOME name, but this stuck with us. It’s not Crossfit, but it is AWESOME. It is for those looking for extreme fitness and is not for the timid.
You have all heard of Crossfit right? Well, you might also know that I am not the biggest fan of the way they program workouts because they don’t. They use random workouts all the time and a lot of injury occurs from the volume and intensity being too high. They are also VERY expensive and frequently have questionable “instructors.”
I have had countless people tell me that Crossfit is ripping TPS off, especially a few years ago when it started to become better known. What they meant was that Crossfit is using a template, to the untrained eye, that looks like what TPS became known for. They are not ripping me off; they are just doing very hard workouts. The difference between what we will be doing and what Crossfit does is that our programs will be programmed for athletes of different skill and fitness levels to make progress without getting injured. Remember, training should be hard, but not impossible. You should not get injured from it and you should look forward to it. You should also be able to walk the next day.
Our program will be based around the Power Clean, the Power Snatch, Squat, Press and Deadlift. We will use these basic barbell lifts along with bodyweight exercises, well-chosen assistance exercises, and conditioning programs that will not give you Rhabdomyosis (unlike Crossfit). We will also have a QUALIFIED Olympic lifting EXPERT teaching you the Olympic lifts (unlike many Crossfits).
Both groups will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings initially and we expect to add more as it grows.
If the new groups or the existing camps don’t work for you, but you’d still like to take advantage of group training, let us know. If you have friends with similar goals , interests, and schedules, great! If not, let us know anyway and we’ll try to match you up with others looking for the same thing.
I expect that the initial groups will fill up right away. If you have been considering personal training, now is the BEST time to jump in.
Register for the group of your choice below.
Training Day:
The next TPS Training Day is set for September 21st. We are squatting again. Due to the Strongman contest, we will not be having a Training Day in August.
The Squat. What can I say that has not already been said? It is the KING of ALL exercises and I’ll bet that you are not doing it right if you are doing it at all. Forget all the bogus crap that you might have heard or read about it being bad for your knees and back. When done right, it is the FOUNDATION of all good exercise programs. If you are not squatting, you are not training.
Come to TPS and let us dispel all of the myths and misinformation about how to squat properly. When Squats are done correctly they:
-Strengthen your whole body including knees and back
-build muscle
-make you faster
-make you stronger on all of your other lifts and in daily life
-build intestinal fortitude
-allow your body to burn fat easier by increasing your metabolism
and so much more that I could write a book on it.
If you are a powerlifter, bring your gear and get ready to set a new PR. If you have never squatted, come and learn how and you can also watch the barnyard animals lift huge weights. Don’t be intimidated by them. They are all really friendly.
Beginners to advanced lifters are all welcome. Bring your friends, even if they train somewhere else! You do not need to be a member to attend.

Top 10 Reasons To Train AT TPS
Help out some deserving athletes
It seems there is something fishy going on in the Track and Field world. I was told of this by TPS member and great athlete, Deirdre Murphy. Her brother was affected by a recent ruling not to allow certain Irish athletes to compete even though they already qualified. Read more from Deirdre here:
“Basically what happened is Brian got the qualification mark for the European championships but because Brian was called up to the 4x4 relay in Barcelona a couple of years ago for the European championships (despite our top two runners--who get lots of lovely funding from our federation--went home before the race) he is no longer considered a developmental athlete. If you are not a developmental athlete then you have to get a qualification mark that is harder than the European standard. Makes sense for a small country, right?
The guy responsible for this is Kevin Ankrom. He was the NZ head of high performance before taking the same position in Ireland for our federation, the AAI. I didn't realize until recently he is living here in Illinois, if LinkedIn is to be believed.
I posted about it on Facebook to my friends:
Getting a qualification mark for a major international track and field championship is like winning the lottery for an athlete (and his/her family and friends). It is a momentous occasion that is the culmination of years of hard work and determination. My brother qualified for the 400m at the European Athletics Championship this year in Helsinki, without ever getting any support or funding from the High Performance unit of AAI. Kevin Ankrom, the new High Performance director, has now bizarrely decided that getting the European Qualification standard is not enough and will not permit him to run in the 400m for no good reason.
Please take a moment to show your support for athletes everywhere who work day in and day out to get the qualification marks that should permit them to compete and not office politics that have no place on the track, isn't that why standards were created in the first place anyway? “
You can show your support by visiting their Facebook page and “liking” it.

New Strength and Conditioning Camps
It’s almost time for our second round of summer Strength and Conditioning camps for high school-aged athletes to begin. July 3rd is the date for round 2 of summer camps.
Camps have been growing steadily and we hope this one will too! Coach Jamie is doing a great job of getting the kids in shape for the fall season. Do you want your child to be the best that they can be? Of course you do.
What can you as a parent do to ensure that they are faster, stronger, more agile, better conditioned and more resistant to injury on the field? You can register them for the TPS Summer Strength Camp.
For full details on our camps, please see the Upcoming Camps page.
New Feature:
TPS is always striving to bring you the best in the fitness industry and this new feature entitled “Strong and Sexy: Nutrition and Training for Performance and Aesthetics” by Molly Galbraith is no exception.

I have known who Molly is for quite some time and I got the chance to meet here when we both presented at the 2012 EliteFTS.com’s Learn to Train seminar. I was very impressed with Molly’s ability to present a lot of complex information in a simple format as well as her ability to get a large group of people moving through her chosen exercises quickly and efficiently.
I spent a lot of time with Molly, Dave Kirschen, Josh Bryant and Harry Selkow while I was there. They are all first class in my book. Back to Molly.
Here is a little information about her:
Molly Galbraith is a highly sought-after nutrition and training expert from Lexington, Kentucky. After graduating at the top of her MBA class at age 22, she put her business savvy and passion for all things nutrition and training to work and started 3 separate fitness businesses.
She is a strength coach and co-owner of J&M Strength and Conditioning, a rapidly expanding, private studio gym in her hometown that’s quickly becoming THE place to go for athletes and the general public alike. She is also co-owner of Red Point Fitness, a one-of-a-kind revolutionary website that builds customized nutrition and training programs for their clients. Finally, she is a co-founder of Girls Gone Strong, THE authority on women’s fitness.
Molly has competed in both Figure and Raw Powerlifting. Her best lifts include a 275 lb. squat, a 165 lb. bench, and a 341 lb. deadlift, and she is on her way to achieve her first raw elite total in the 165 weight class this year.

This is just scratching the surface of Molly’s accomplishments. What does this mean to you? Well, I have spoken with her and she is excited to contribute a monthly feature to the TPS newsletter. Each month, she will answer a readers question or two and give it to you straight. No BS here. It’s all buff, no fluff as Greg would say.
Readers, get to work with your questions and reply back to the newsletter with them. Please make sure to tell me that they are for Molly and she will pick one or two each month and give you the answer. It might not be what you want to hear, but it will be correct.

Big Seminar 2
A few years ago, TPS ran the Big Seminar. This was awesome, we had some of the industry’s best coaches and athletes in for a weekend full of awesome.
Right now, we are in the planning phases for a Big Seminar 2, which will include (as of now) Dave Kirschen, Julia Ladewski, Molly Galbraith, the compact yet brilliant Harry Selkow and more of the industry’s best up and comers. We will also have some veterans too.
I’ll get you more details as they finalize. This is slated for March 2013.

New Personal Training Options
TPS is revamping its personal training options right now to bring you the same great results at a much more affordable price. Let’s face it, the boom of the 90s is gone and is not coming back any time soon. Many people want to utilize the services of a professional trainer, but can’t afford the cost of one-on-one sessions.
Over the years, we, and the industry as a whole have found that you can get the exact same results in a small group that you can in a one-on-one setting, but at a much more affordable price. With that in mind, we will be announcing new personal training groups very soon. We will have groups of up to 5 people training together with a coach at a much lower price. You will get the same great results at an even greater value.
These groups will be for people with the same goals and will be offered in the day and evening. If you thought that you could not afford personal training, think again.
We are also finalizing the details for our all new, Jim Wendler approved 531 Training group. Jim Wendler, a good friend and creator of the 531 method has given TPS his seal of approval to begin running 531 training groups.
One of the best things about 531 is its simplicity. One of the problems for many, especially beginners is they just don’t know how to lift properly. Many people also don’t know how to estimate their maxes, or what assistance work to do. TPS’s 531 group will take all of these issues and more away. We will teach you how to lift, how to implement the program, what assistance exercises to use and more. We’ll even give you the exact amount of weight to lift for each set based on your maxes. All you have to do is show up!
We expect all the details for this group finalized in a week or two.
Training Day:
The next TPS Training Day is scheduled for Saturday June 16th
Strongman Saturdays
June 9th is the next TPS Strongman Saturday
Seminar News:
We are finishing up the details on another seminar now for November or December with Matt Rhodes and Vincent DiZenzo and possibly a surprise guest. We will announce this once all details are finalized.
Everett Little League
TPS’s Little League team, the Blue Claws, is doing well this season. As of this writing they are 3-1-1 and are looking good.
Stop by Sacramone Park in Everett to watch a game and support a great organization. We will be there for Field Day on June 2nd (tomorrow): we’ll have a table set up and we’ll be doing some demo’s, too. We hope to see you there.
New Strength and Conditioning Camps
It’s almost time for our second round of summer Strength and Conditioning camps for high school-aged athletes to begin. July 3rd is the date for round 2 of summer camps.
If you have been considering registering your child for a program to get him or her ready for fall sports, this is it. Our camps are run by Strength and Conditioning specialist Jamie Smith who has a tremendous amount of experience working with athletes of all levels. Jamie was an assistant strength coach at the University of Connecticut before we arrived at TPS, and they have an outstanding program. Jamie takes his experiences there and elsewhere and applies them to our program.
It’s not too late to get your child in the area’s premier summer program. If you want your child to excel at their chosen sport, strength training under the watchful eye of an experienced coach is the best thing that you can do for them in the off-season.
For full details on our camps, please see the Upcoming Camps page.

UPDATES:
Body weight Conditioning Class on Monday and Wednesday mornings is temporarily cancelled. We re sorry for the inconvenience.
I know that I tend to repeat myself (I’m getting old, just look at the color of the beard) but it has been busy at TPS this month. We are working behind the scenes on ways to make your member experience the best that it can be. We are getting the lighting upgrades finalized, adding cleaning shifts, making sure that the workout areas are organized and everything is where it belongs. This is an area that you can help us to make a big improvement. If you see something that needs to be addressed, please let TeamTPS members know about it. We will get it rectified as soon as possible.
This brings me to telling a story, as I am wont to do: I have tried to recreate the atmosphere here of a gym that is closed now. It is one of the gyms that I trained at when I was a mere pup and the beard was short and brown. I wanted to keep the atmosphere here similar but better. The old gym was a filthy hole in the wall, but all of the members took massive pride in it. Everyone racked their weights and when someone didn’t, usually a new member, the other members would give them a hard time about it. Nobody threw trash anywhere but the trash barrels and the parking lot was never littered. On the rare occasion that someone did litter or throw trash on the floor, again, the members spoke up about it to the offending party. Sometimes, they were not very nice about it. The members took PRIDE in their hole-in-the-wall gym. The owners didn’t. They hardly ever cleaned it and never upgraded the equipment.
The fact that the owners didn’t really care about the gym was of no consequence to the members. All of the members were very serious about their training and they made you serious about your training. They had gym etiquette. You had a great member experience there.
Now believe me, I feel that 99% of our members feel the same way and do their part to keep the atmosphere here similar. I was having a conversation last night with two of our members that have been here since we opened on Vine Street. They are the ones that inspired this piece. They were complaining to me about a few people that were upstairs. They were tired of the same people not racking their weights or talking on the phone while they were working out. Nothing can ruin a member’s experience at the gym more than going to a rack and having to take 5 plates off of each side of the bar so they can use it, or listening to the details of someone’s drama as they talk on the phone while you are trying to train. They asked me what they can do about it.
Now, I know these two guys mean it because I have seen them breaking down equipment that they didn’t use and putting stuff away and have also seen one of them cleaning the sink in the men’s room because someone else left it a mess. They have pride, just like the vast majority of our members. I didn’t really know what to tell them, except to say that they can certainly ask an offender to have some etiquette and clean up after themselves.
No, I am not asking you to clean the bathrooms or anything like that, but I am asking all of you to pitch in, keep the atmosphere here positive and high-energy. Please don’t read this and think that we feel the members are not awesome. Read it and think about the pride that these two members showed to me in being able to train at one of the best gyms in the USA. There is a reason they don’t train at Planet Fitness. I’d tell you why, but I would get sued by Planet.
I guess the take-home message here is that if you see someone not doing their part and leaving the place a mess, or if something needs cleaning, let us know. You do not have to tell us who the person was, just let us know it happened, and we will keep an eye out and ask the people who are not living up to their end to step up their game.
We want TPS members to have the best member experience, but we can’t see everything. Help us out so we can make your experience the best.

Class cancellation :
We are very sorry, but Saturday May 5th, Yoga and Pilates are cancelled for one day only.
Jen is going to wish her husband Eddie, and friend Dave Kinahan the best when they compete in the Tough Mudder race in Vermont.
This is one day only! Regular schedule will resume next week.
Pardon our appearance:
TPS begins its quest to go greener this week. Please pardon the mess as the contractors install all new light fixtures in the gym making TPS more energy efficient. We will do as much of this during off-peak hours to minimize the disturbance to all of you.
Our condolences:

TPS and the world lost a great person last week. TPS member Stephen Perez was killed by a coward over the weekend.
Stephen was a decorated soldier, a valued client here, and a loved family member. For him to pass away after serving his country valiantly is a disgrace.
I sincerely hope that Massachusetts institutes the death penalty when his killer is caught and executes the maggot who murdered him. The world will be a better place without whoever did this. It is worse off without Stephen in it.
The public is very happy to film everything they see on a camera phone. I hope that someone got video of the killer and turns to over to the Boston Police Department in an act of courage to avenge a heroes death.
Farewell Stephen and thank you for all the good you did while you were here with us.
Our thoughts and love go out to his family and friends.
Seminar News
It has been finalized; the next EliteFTS.com Learn to Train Seminar (LTT) is scheduled for May 25th and 26th at the Elite compound in London, Ohio.
I (Murph) will be presenting at it along with Jeremy Frey, Steve Pulcinalla, Dave Tate, Josh Bryant, John Meadows and Chad Smith.
This is going to be an AWESOME weekend. I highly suggest that you get to Ohio if you can make it. LTT’s are some of the most highly rated educational seminars in the world. Where else can you spend a weekend with people of this caliber for a few hundred bucks? You will not be sitting in a huge auditorium listening to them talk. You will be in the gym listening and then getting under the bar getting world class coaching from the best names in the industry. I can promise you that there will be no balancing on rubber discs, or “functional” foolishness like at other seminars. This is the real deal.
As of now, it is almost sold out, but there are a few spots left. For more information and to register, visit EliteFTS.com
Do your elbows hurt?
My good friend Jedd Johnson has teamed up with Rick Kaselj and they have just released an awesome new book/DVD combo: Fixing Elbow Pain.
In it you will find remedies they guarantee will fix most common pain related issues to the elbow and shoulder. Jedd knows a thing or two about elbow and forearm pain. He is one of the most respected authorities in the world on grip strength. This does not come without getting banged up. If he stays banged up, he can’t set world records. Guess what, he sets them, a lot.
If you lift weights, play sports or use a computer, you probably have elbow pain. Elbow pain afflicts most of us at some point in our lives. Jedd has come up with a solution. You know Jedd, he writes the Diesel Injection column in our newsletter and he knows a thing or two about having banged up elbows.
He has taken the time to partner with Rick Kaselj and they have put together a blueprint for you to get pain relief within 1 week. No more golfers elbow or tennis elbow, no more pain from using the keyboard and mouse at work. No more pain from swinging a baseball bat or hockey stick. No more pain at all. They also have included a bunch of bonuses for you and it is a $157.00 value that is offered at under $60.00. If you order before April 27th , it is only $19.00.
Jedd is offering a MONEY BACK GUARANTEE on this program if you do not see relief within 7 days of implementing it.

Everett Little League
TPS has just sponsored its first Little League team, the Blue Claws! We are proud to partner with Everett Little League and help out a great community organization. Join us a Sacramone Park in Everett on June 2nd for the Everett Little League Field Day. Stay and watch a game or two.
We’ll keep you posted on how our team is doing.
Good Luck Greg
It’s a sad day at TPS: Greg Robins is leaving us for another opportunity. Greg has been a member for a long time, and an employee for a short time. He has accepted a position much closer to his home (about an hour away from TPS). We wish Greg all the best in his future endeavors. He will be missed by all of us here.
Good luck to you, Greg.
New Strength and Conditioning Camps
Our next round of Strength and Conditioning camps is set to begin on May 8th. This will be Round 1 of the summer series of camps.
TPS Strength and Conditioning camps are for athletes 12-18 years old. We break them into two groups, Premiere (12-14) and Elite (15-18). This ensures that your child will be training in a group of kids of roughly the same size, skill and maturity level. Camps are run 3 days a week, and run for 8-week blocks.
We expect a huge turnout for these summer camps. Pre-registration is required. Please feel free to visit us during Open House on May 5th at 12:00 noon for the camps and speak with our head coach, Jamie Smith, and listen to a short presentation on what to expect. Bring the kids, too.
For full details on our camps, please see the Upcoming Camps page.

Our Youth Strength and Conditioning camps are running now! We are going to announce the summer camp dates in about a week. TPS will also announce the next open house dates for parents and athletes to take a tour of the gym and meet the coaches.
Get your kids in the gym this summer, so they will be better prepared for fall sports. Yeah, I know, school isn’t even out yet, but it will be before you know it. Get your kids stronger, more resistant to injury, faster and more team-oriented with TPS Strength and Conditioning Camps.
For full details on our camps, please see the Upcoming Camps page.
New convenience for TPS members
How many times have you needed a water, a Gatorade, or a Muscle Milk and didn’t have any cash on you? TPS is now making your training easier. We will be offering “On Account” deposits for you.
Simply stop by the Front Desk and let the team know that you want to add funds to your account. Once you do that, you can run to the desk between sets, grab a drink and get back to your workout without worrying about having cash on you while training. Whatever you take will be deducted from your “On Account” credit. It can’t be any easier than that. You don’t even need an account card!
Funds can be added in any amount at any time. This is an ideal option for parents of the younger members that take boxing and Group X classes. If you have kids, you know they lose money or spend it on things you might not want them to have.
We hope that you like this new service.
Show us your gear.
Got TPS gear? Take a picture of you wearing it someplace and we’ll post it on our Facebook page. It could be working out, it could be at a bar or it could be someplace we can’t even dream of.

Spring Strength and Conditioning Camps for high School Athletes Open House
Total Performance Sports is hosting an informative Open House on Saturday March 10th at 12:00 noon for high school athletes and their parents.
We invite all who are interested to attend and listen to a short presentation on our program, which begins on March 12th.
Parents, give your child every opportunity to excel at their sport. We will get them stronger, faster, more agile and more resistant to injury. We will also do this in an environment that builds team spirit and individual accountability in a positive manner.
For those who don't know,
I just returned form the Arnold Classic.
I went with Eric Dawson of TPS who qualified for the Amateur Strongman World Championships.
It was a 2 day event, and the day 1 events were the qualifiers for day 2. Day 1 events were not Eric's strong suits, except the medley.
First event was the log, Eric hit 3 reps, I forget the weight. This placed him in the middle of the pack.
Next was the medley. It consisted of yoke, sandbag and farmers. I think the weights were, as best as I can remember 850 yoke, 250 sandbag, 300 farmers. All for 50 feet. He did this in 34 seconds. Smoking. I think he placed 6th. After 2 events he was in the top 10.
3rd event was the car deadlift at about 800ish, this was not his strong suit, so I told him to be conservative and shoot for 8-9 reps and shut it down. He zeroed on this. This event was his nemesis at the Nationals as well and he worked hard to bring it up.
Final event was the Husafeld stone at around 350-400ish.
Eric set the pace on this and went 179 feet which stood for a while, but was eventually beaten. We had hoped that 2 top 10 finishes would get him to day 2, where the events were his strong suits.
Sadly, Eric did not qualify for day 2, but did do very well, placing 19th or 20th out of the best 56 international amateurs in the world.
There was a ton of talent here. No slouches and the event was very well run.
I am proud of Eric and look forward to him winning next year. It is not an unrealistic expectation.

Goin' green!
TPS is going green over the next few months. Please excuse our appearance as we will have lighting contractors in here from time to time removing the old, energy-wasting light fixtures and replacing them with all new, energy-saving ones. We will also be going over the layout of the lighting to make the gym much better. As you know, some spots are dark and some are well lit. The new fixtures will make the gym evenly lit and energy efficient.
New Strength and Conditioning Camps
Beginning March 12, TPS is hosting our spring round of Strength and Conditioning camps for High School athletes. We expect these camps to be full, as we had an open house last week which was well attended. If you are interested in getting your child well prepared for their season, you need to pre-register to ensure they get a spot. Don’t be left out! The competition is training and probably going someplace that is not as good as us! We are the BEST.

Strongman Saturdays
It’s getting nice out and we are moving back outside this month for the Sled Drag/Keg Carry medley. Saturday March 10th at 12:00 noon, Eric Dawson of TPS will lead you through a grueling medley that will give you some great new ideas about how to add cardio/conditioning to your workouts. Why get on the boring treadmill when you can go outside and do something that will not only get you in shape, but will get you STRONG at the same time?
Steve’s new blog
Steve has taken to the blogging world and has set up his page here.
Look to him for some brilliant training advice surrounded by some nonsense. It’s up to you to filter out the difference.

Training Day:
Saturday March 17th is the next TPS Training Day and we are doing the Snatch by popular request. TPS is bringing Yasha Khan and Nikita Durnev back to teach you the Snatch.
You might know Nikita; he is running our Olympic Weightlifting group here at TPS, and Yasha is from Boston Weightlifting. They both did the Power Clean Training Day last year and it was one of the biggest ones that we have had so far. They are both very accomplished weightlifters, but more importantly, excellent coaches. You will learn one of the most difficult lifts of all quickly and be doing it well by the end of the day.
Media Assault
We have been busy on MensFitness.com lately.
There are a few new pieces coming out there from Jamie Smith, Greg Robins, Steve DiLello, and Murph of TPS.
Below are 2 of the most recent ones.
February 2012:
NEW HIGH SCHOOL STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING CAMPS!
Go to our Upcoming Camps page for all the information on the Spring 2012 High School Strength and Conditioning Camps.
Early registration extended for the Juggernaut Seminar-it expires February 5th.
2012 TPS Strongman
Our event has been approved by the NAS Inc. home office and will be held here at TPS on August 25, 2012. The TPS Mass. State Strongman Championships is one of the longest running shows in the U.S.A.; this is our 10th anniversary.
I will be teaming up with Nate Fitzgerald again to run the biggest and best contest in New England, maybe the U.S. (we hope). As usual we will need sponsors and volunteers to help us. If you are interested in helping out, send me an email.
As usual, we will be trying to raise some money for the Chelsea Soldiers Home. This is one of my favorite charities. The Soldiers Home is home to many U.S. military veterans that have no place else to go for medical care and a place to live. Sadly, the government does not give them the funding that they need to make life the most comfortable for these men that gave so much for us. Help us raise the biggest donation for them that we have ever had.
For all the details on the event, go to our Contest Page. We will have applications available for download on the NAS website this week and sponsor packages will be going out soon.
New Column in the Advocate
TPS is teaming up with the Advocate newspapers for a bi-monthly column that I hope you will like. It is called “Weakness Is a Crime,” and is named after Murph’s blog.
The column will feature health, lifting and fitness tips for everyone, not just strength athletes. You can read it every other week in the Advocate, which is distributed FREE in Everett, Malden, Saugus, and Revere.
New Camps Starting Soon!
All new rounds of Fitcamps begin at the end of this month! Olympic Lifting, Total Transformation, Awesome Camp, and Women’s Fitcamp are going to be going again with all new programming for you to keep making progress. This is the ideal time for beginners to start a supervised and well-organized training program.
As you may know, personal training is simply the best way to achieve your fitness goals, but is out of the reach financially for many. Camp settings give you of the benefits of supervised personal training at a fraction of the cost. Joining our Fitcamps can bring the cost to as low as $12.50 per session. That is much less expensive than one-on-one personal training.
Are you tired of going to the gym and not getting results? Are you dying to get leaner, get stronger, to look better and feel better? A properly structured training plan is the FASTEST and SAFEST way to do all of these and more. Why wander around the gym not knowing what to do? Let out team of experts help you reach your full potential now.
We are also adding an Awesome Camp at night for guys only. This will begin February 28th at 7:30 pm. This has been requested and will fill up. If you don’t know about Awesome Camp, go to our Awesome page and see what it is all about.
Too lazy to click? Me too. Here are some brief details: Guys want to be jacked and strong, and they waste a lot of time trying to get there. Let our team of coaches get you jacked, strong and in-shape. We pick the best exercises for you, like squats, bench presses, deadlifts and the right assistance exercises, to give you strength, speed, size and more awesomeness. You will learn how to do all of them from coaches that know all the techniques and tricks to get you STRONG. The stronger you are, the more weight you can handle on assistance lifts. This is a simple formula to increase all things that make you more awesome.
If you want to get in shape fast but aren’t sure what to do, or if you just need a change, give one of our camps a try. It’s eight weeks of awesome.
Show us your gear.
Got TPS gear? Take a picture of you wearing it someplace and we’ll post it on our Facebook page. It could be working out, it could be at a bar, or it could be someplace we can’t even dream of.
January 2012:
What: Team Haycraft Muay Thai Seminar
When: Saturday, January 14, 2012 and Sunday January 15, 2012
Where: TPS Boxing Gym
Eric Haycraft is coming to TPS. Eric is a LEGENDARY Muay coach who has trained some of the best fighters in America, and the world, including Lindsay Scheer. Mr. Haycraft uses the Dutch style of Muay Thai, like Rob Kaman. This seminar will build off of the Kaman seminar we had last year.
We expect this to be a sellout even on short notice.
Full details on curriculum to follow soon.
It’s January 1st and everyone on the planet is about to join a gym! Hopefully you will refer all of your friends and family to TPS (and get the FREE month for it too). They all want to make huge gains but don’t really know how, or don’t really have a plan. I write about this every year, and now is no different: setting attainable goals for the New Year.
In the gym business, we see lots of people come in guns blazing for the first month or two and then never see them again. There are 2 main reasons for why they come and why they leave:
Why they come:
1. They are unhappy with their bodies/health and want to change it.
2. They saw a news show or tv program talking about New Years’ resolutions, and fitness is ALWAYS a big one.
Why they don’t stay:
1. They set no goals or unrealistic goals.
2. They don’t know what to do, so they do too little, the wrong things, or they do too much and get REALLY sore and hate the way it feels so they leave.
These are things that can be fixed easily by coming to a place like TPS. We encourage setting small, attainable goals, and milestone goals. A small attainable goal for New Years’ is something like, “I will go the gym at least 2 times a week for the first month and take a class (like Gutts and Butts).” Or, “I will cut out regular soda from my diet for the first month of my fitness plan” These are 2 very easy to attain goals that are concrete and will produce results.
They will not drastically transform your body, but they are good goals that are easy to stick to that will produce a small change. Setting four or five short term goals with a long term goals, say 6 months or a year in the future will lead you done the road to success.
Long term goals are a little different, they are much bigger. A good long term goal is “I will lose 35 pounds of body fat by July 1st by getting on a good nutrition plan and exercising on a regular basis.” Or: “I will run a 10k by June 1st”. The goals that are set are entirely individual. You might have no interest in running a10k, but you might want to lose 4 dress sizes, or you might want to be the All Star this summer in your softball league. What your goal is does not matter to anyone else, it is yours. Write down short term attainable goals and long term milestone goals and attach dates to them. Setting dates for your goals places accountability on you. When you set your dates, make sure you set up a reward for attaining the goals and a punishment for not attaining it.
Rewards are easy, you know what you like. It could be a new outfit, or a new high tech smart phone. Punishments are not easy. They should not be too harsh. They should be something that will force you to stick to the plan. Maybe you don’t get the trip to Jamaica in March if you did not attain all of your short term goals. Another one that is good is a personal financial penalty. Make up a “jar”. Put a label on it that says something that will motivate you (this is given the fact that you can afford to do this). Every time you get to the gym, or stick to the plan, you put a certain dollar amount in it. Maybe you are going to quit smoking by cutting your cigarette smoking in half the first month. Take the difference between what you spent and what you would have spent and put it in the jar once a week. At the end of the time period you set for the small goals if you attained them you can spend the money on whatever you want. If you didn’t, the money stays in the jar until you hit the milestone.
Butts are about $7.00 a pack. If you smoke a pack a day, that is almost $200.00 a month on smokes. If you cut it in half, you will have about $100.00 in the jar at the end of the first month. Your plan might have you off the butts in 4 months. This can add up to over $500.00 easily at the end of 4 months. That’s a nice reward that you can get for yourself. Of course, this can be applied to anything, not just smoking.
What about those of you that don’t know how to get to your fitness goals? That’s where we come on. TPS has a Team of EXPERTS on staff for whatever you want to do. We are here to help you get to your fitness goals. Talk to one of our training Team members about what to do, set up some personal training sessions sign up for one of our fitness camps. If that is not in your budget, take the classes that we offer. They are designed with you in mind. You don’t need to know anything, just show up and give 100% effort each and every time (at least twice week). You’ll be amazed at how much progress you make. Consistency is the key, make fitness a part of your routine.
Dr. Hatfield used to ask a question at his personal training seminars. He would ask all the students why people do not exercise regularly. The students would give out a variety of good answers but never his answer. His answer was that people do not exercise regularly because they do not know or FEAR the consequences of not doing it. He asked if everyone brushed their teeth daily, and for the most part everyone said yes. I was there when someone didn’t say yes, but that’s a whole ‘nother story.
He would go on to explain that the real reason we brushed out teeth was that we FEARED the CONSEQUENCES of not brushing our teeth. This was so simple that everyone had a light bulb go off in their heads, not the crappy fluorescent ones either, the good incandescent one. Exercise is the same thing. There are serious health consequences later in life, and as it is going now, earlier. Look at he juvenile obesity rate and the epidemic of diabetes in America today. These are CONSEQUENCES of an inactive and unhealthy sedentary lifestyle. There are many more.
You can address these consequences TODAY by getting off of the couch and using the gym membership that you bought. Just get up and get in here. Write down some REAL goals on paper and set up a realistic timeline and a plan to attain them. We will help you do it.
TPS is different than most gyms, we want to see our members in here achieving their goals and we want to hear about them. Tell us about your success so we can share it with the rest of the members to build a community that fosters success. Forward this email to your friends that you think might be interested or ones that go to gyms that care about their monthly dues instead of their success.
TPS wishes you the best year ever, now get in here.
TPS is adding a slew of AWESOME new classes to the already full schedule. We are adding in new 30 minute express classes too. No more saying that you don’t have time to work out!
We have TRX based classes, ladies only classes, advanced kettlebells and more.
For full details, go to our Free Group X page and read all the descriptions.
You can also view the schedule here.
New Seminars:
I’ve got confirmation from Chad Wesley Smith that he will be here on March 24/25, 2012 for a 2 day Juggernaut Training Systems seminar. Chad was here in November 2011
for the November Strength Seminar and we felt that he a key figure to bring in 2012 for our seminar series.
If you are not familiar with the Juggernaut Method read about it here: The Juggernaut Method E-Book
The Juggernaut Method is taking the training world by storm. Why? Because it works. Raw training is the best way to get strong. Even if you use powerlifting gear, raw training will make
your equipped lifts go up. This seminar is not just for powerlifters.
Trainers, coaches, athletes and novices to the weight room will all benefit from learning how to properly lift RAW.
For full details and to register at a huge discount click here.
Women's Basic Training
2012 also marks the return of the TPS seminar. For years we did in house educational seminars for personal trainers, coaches and novice lifters. We are bringing them back this year! Our first seminar, by popular demand is Basic Training for Women.
I get emails all the time from members and non-members alike asking for this. All of the emails say that they take the classes and love them. While they are getting RESULTS, they are not getting the maximum results. They want to take it to the next level. They also tell me that some of them are a little intimidated by the weight room, not just ours, all of them. A lot of people just don’t know what to do and they want to learn.
For more information and to register click here.

Got TPS gear? Take a picture of you wearing it someplace and we’ll post it on our Facebook page.
It could be working out, it could be at a bar, or it could be someplace we can’t even dream of.
December 2011:
ALL CAMPS AND PERSONAL TRAINING 10% Off!
TPS Gift Certificates
The holiday shopping season is upon us and what better gift is there than the gift of health and fitness? Maybe a big bag of money, but that’s probably out of the question for most of you. If you can’t give a big bag of money, how about a TPS gift certificate? They are available in any denomination and are good for all of the services that we offer at TPS. Best of all, they are on sale in December for 10% off.
If you have a friend or loved one who has expressed interest in joining a gym, is interested in personal training or whatever, give them a TPS gift certificate for the holidays. They only go on sale once a year, and now is the time to save.
New Classes:
We are finalizing he format of several new Group X classes for you, at no extra cost, for 2012. Look for a TRX-based class, a women-only class, and more coming soon.
As I always say, TPS is constantly striving to bring you the most value and service for your dollar and we will continue to do that. More classes means more chances for you to exercise in a fun and productive way. Best of all, they’re free with your membership.
Seminar News:
2012 will bring the return of the TPS seminar. We will not only host more great presenters, but we will run our own. We did this in the past for many years, and in the last few, things have been so busy, I haven’t had time to write quality seminar material. TPS will return to its roots and to one of the things that made us well-known and respected in the industry, in house seminars.
Over the years we have run basic through advanced strength-training seminars, strongman seminars, basic through advanced nutrition seminars and many more. In 2012, you can expect several lower priced, 4-hour seminars focusing on things that you can apply right away, like basic nutrition for fat loss and muscle gain, a basic strength training seminar, and we will take a survey of our members and see what they would like. We can do a women’s training seminar, MMA training or anything that our members desire in the fitness world.
You can also expect to see another Rhodes and Vincent traveling circus, and we are discussing things with Marc “Spud” Bartley of South Carolina Barbell. If his schedule allows, we will have him up to teach his own unique style of training.
Stay tuned to the Upcoming Seminars page and the newsletter for full details next month.
Olympic Weightlifting at TPS
Our Olympic Weightlifting camp is up and running strong with Coach Nikita Durnev. In January we will be launching the first, full 8-week program. The 6-week intro program had more registrations than we expected so if you were thinking about attending, I strongly suggest that you pre-register for January. I know it sounds like a sales pitch with a call to action, but it will be filled up.
For full details on the program visit our Olympic Weightlifting Page.

Women’s FitCamp-Total Transformation camp Updates
TPS is offering a 4 week Mini Camp for our Total Transformation and Women’s Fitcamp members in December. Usually, we take a break from the camps during the holiday season. This year, by request, we are not. We have set up a special one month only rate for December and are changing the programming to keep your metabolism sky high during the busy holiday month. In December, the gym is a ghost town. People are busy and they don’t find the time to get to the gym and the holiday pounds pack on. Our current campers do not want this to happen and the asked if we could do this for them, so we did. Just so you know, we have set up the camps for 2012 with no interruptions. You’ll be training all year!
Camps will run on the usual days. The best part is the price. We have set up a discounted price for you for this special 4 week program.
Non-members with 4 week membership-Special-$159.00
Members-$129 special price
Camp Dates:
Total Transformation - 4 weeks – 8 sessions
Monday Dec. 5th 2011 – Wednesday Dec. 28th 2011
Women's Fit Camp – 4 weeks – 8 Sessions
Tuesday Dec. 6th 2011 – Thursday Dec. 29th 2011
Toys for Tots

As always, TPS is helping out the USMC again in their annual Toys for Tots Drive. TPS is an official drop off station for them. We have always had a tremendous response from our generous members with this charity drive.
If you can, please bring in a NEW, unwrapped toy and leave it in the box you will make a needy child very happy this Christmas. Everyone is not as fortunate as some of us. It is hard to believe that some children will not get anything at all this year and that SUCKS.
Let's all do out part to make this Christmas a little better for those not as well off as us.
As I write this, I think of how I would feel if I could not afford a gift for my son and it makes me very sad. If I were in that position, I know that words could never express how grateful I would feel for someone taking the time to think of him without ever having met him. Please take the time and think of a young, innocent child waiting for Santa to give them a gift. Make their day a happy one.
New faces at TPS
TPS is happy to welcome Greg Robin to our team of expert trainers. Greg already had quite a bit of experience working elsewhere and, like Eric Dawson, the opportunity to snap him up and get him here presented itself. We jumped on it and are proud to welcome Greg to our staff.
Greg is a certified Russian Kettlebell instructor (RKC), a certified personal trainer (NASM), a certified strength coach. He is also certified in TRX training. Greg has an extensive knowledge of injury assessment, corrective exercise and flexibility/mobility assessment/correction.
Greg is currently accepting clients. If you are interested in training with Greg, I highly suggest that you contact us immediately. It seems that whenever we add a new team member, they fill up very quickly. I suspect this will be the case with Greg. He will also be teaching the a.m. Gutts and Butts class as well as some new classes that we have in the works.
We are also training 2 new interns. Nikita Durnev and Jamie Smith are in our intern program now. Both have excellent resumes and are getting acclimated to our system.
Nikita is simply the best Olympic weightlifter that I have ever seen in person. He is from Russia and is a Master of Sport there. He will be learning our system of personal training and also teaching Olympic Weightlifting at TPS once his internship is completed.
Jamie has an excellent resume as well; he worked at Mike Boyle's Strength and Conditioning as well as the University of Connecticut (UCONN) in the Strength and Conditioning Department. At UCONN, Jamie worked with the basketball program.
We expect both of these two to be read to go very soon, as they already have a wealth of experience and knowledge.

He is a Master of Sport in Russia and is currently beginning his training for the 2016 Olympics.
This is a huge opportunity to learn from a true master of his game. Don't let his young age fool you. The Russians take this VERY seriously and earning Master of Sport is their highest honor. Let Nikita take your training VERY seriously, too.

The course will be offered on Saturday November 5th from 2:00-6:00 pm. We will be scheduling CPR and other classes soon.
Training Day:
Our next TPS Training Day is scheduled for November 19th. We'll be deadlifting by request. The deadlift is something that is frequently maligned as bad for you and dangerous. When done wrong, any lift is. When done right, it is a different story. Learn to pull the right way and get strong and jacked fast. If you are new to lifting, begin properly. If you are a seasoned lifter, let us tune up any issues that you might have.
Training Day is the cheapest and best way to train with a group of experienced lifters and coaches. Learning how to lift the right way from those who have proven themselves as coaches and competitors is a chance that you should not miss. You already know that Team TPS is exactly that, proven and experienced.
Training Day is open to members and non-members alike. It is quickly becoming an event that is drawing people from all over the state and neighboring states. Don't miss out. You can register online now or on the day-of at the Front Desk.

New SpudInc. Products
We've just added 3 new SpudInc. products to the website. We've added a Swiss Bar and 2 sledgehammers.
The Swiss Bar is awesome. We've got a Swiss Bar here at TPS and it is in constant use. It fits in a rack or on a bench like a standard barbell, but it has different hand positions. The hand positions are neutral-grip like a strongman log. This gives you variety in your training and the neutral grip takes stress off of your shoulders.
Spud has made up 2 sledgehammers in his evil lab for you to bang away with and get in unreal shape. Sledgehammer training is becoming pretty mainstream and for good reason: it works. You can start banging away at an old tire and build unstoppable conditioning. It’s fun, too, you get to take out all of your aggression in a safe way. No killing your boss anymore!
There are 2 different models to choose from. One is 30 pounds of solid made in the USA steel, and the other is 38 pounds but is adjustable in weight. You can add sand, lead shot, or whatever you like to increase the weight as your fitness level progresses.
To see the new toys and to order them, got to our Strongman products page.

Sept. 2011
-Somber Anniversary
I'd like to take a moment to reflect on the anniversary coming this month-it is the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on our country. I will not go into politics, but on the 11th, let's all take a moment and remember the victims of the horrible attack on our country, remember their families, remember the sadness, remember the anger, remember the pride the nation felt after- that we were Americans. One country, united.
9-11. Never forget. Ever.

August 2011
The next round of TPS Fitness Camps are about to begin. Have you registered yet? If you haven't you are missing out on some of the hardest, but most fun and effective training sessions available anywhere. We offer three different camps right now, one for women only, one for men only and one for men and women.
First off is Women's Fitcamp. This is ladies only and meets Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. Fitcamp is the best way to get top-quality personal training for a low price. Training in a group is less expensive than one-on-one and is just as effective. It is fun, too! You will train with a group of women who are all motivated and supportive. We will teach you how to perform a wide variety of exercises to get you lean, fit, strong and healthy. You will see and feel changes in yourself in just a few short weeks.
Women's Fitcamp begins on Tuesday, August 16th. Don't be left out.
Total Transformation Camp is for men and women and meets on Monday and Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The next one begins on Monday, August 15th. Total Transformation Camp is all about losing body fat. Our campers routinely lose at least 4% body fat in only 8 weeks. Many of them only do the camps and no other exercise. Although this is not what we suggest, it is effective. If you exercise a few more times per week your results will much greater. Try taking Chuck's Gutts & Butts class, the kettlebell class, or boxing/kickboxing, too.
When you come to Total Transformation camp, you will be moving through a series of exercises that are paired together to melt fat off of your body at an alarming rate. It has been proven time and time again that strength training is the fastest and best way to burn fat and build muscle. Why waste hours spinning your wheels on the cardio equipment and get no results?
Get yourself signed up today for Total Transformation Camp and transform your body into what you have always wanted it to be.
We also offer EFT options for camps that are very inexpensive. See the Front Desk for details.
July 2011
TEAM TPS Dominates in Strongman again!
Congratulations to everyone who competed at Art McDermott’s Fitness Revolution Strongman Challenge at his new facility in Tewksbury! The event was held on Saturday, June 25, 2011, and consisted of the Farmers Walk, Axle Clean & Press, Car Deadlift, Tire Flip/Sled Drag Medley, and Atlas Stones.

JON BALDWIN also came in at a fairly close 4th place in the Lightweight Division, a terrific achievement for his first contest and considering the top 3 were national-level competitors!
WAYNE McGUIRE, who is not a member but trains for Strongman at TPS occasionally, also took 2nd Place in the High School Division.
MURPH took on judging duties and a big thanks to Mary Southworth and Russ Smith for making the contest run smoothly.

New Radio Show!
Matt Rhodes and Vincent DiZenzo of EliteFTS.com now have their own radio show! It's called "Just Big" and can be heard Monday nights at 8:00 p.m. EST on http://ftns.co internet radio. That's not a typo, it's .co, not .com.
The show is about being big, getting big, getting strong and listening to Rhodes and Vinny talk about all things awesome. The show is great. I listened to the first two broadcasts and was impressed. Apparently many others were too as they crashed the server for the site as a result of too many people logging in to listen. This was the first time that happened we have been told.
The show has featured many lifting greats like Dave Tate, Jim Wendler, Rob "TT" McCray and will have many more over the season. Murph (me) is scheduled to be a guest too.
Life is too short to be small so if you want to know how to get big, tune in.
New Strongman Contest
Saturday June 25th, Art McDermott is making his return to promoting Strongman contests after a layoff. Art is running the Fitness Revolution Strongman Challenge at his new facility, Fitness Revolution in Tewksbury. Art is a veteran competitor and promoter and always runs a great show. The TPS crew will be there to help out with the show too.
The Strongman Challenge will feature classic events like the tire flip, atlas stones, car deadlift and more. If you are looking for something great to do with the family, this is the event to go to. Bring the kids, watch some strongman and have a great time. I'll see you there
Strongman Saturdays
TPS is launching a new program-Strongman Saturdays. Eric Dawson will be running a Strongman training session every Saturday, except when we have a Training Day. We have had a lot of requests to do this and we are doing it!
The goal of these sessions is help you learn how to use strongman equipment safely and effectively. Whether you are new to training, a veteran who is looking for another tool to use in your arsenal, or an aspiring strongman looking to clean up your form you will take away valuable information from these sessions. Each week we will focus on one to two events (weather permitting we may change event days, we will post any changes on our Facebook page).
These sessions are open to TPS members and non-members too. These sessions are offered at an introductory price of only $10.00 per person for the first two months. They will go to $20.00 in August. If you are interested in learning Strongman this is the best $10.00 you will ever spend! We'll see you there at 12:00 Noon.
For full details go to the Strongman page.
TPS is expanding again!
It's getting pretty busy upstairs at peak times and our landlord Ed has come to the rescue again. We will be adding in more HARDCORE training area downstairs soon. We are working on getting the space ready now.
The new space will be in the strongman shed outside next to the main building. We will be adding in another 500 square feet of training room. This area will be dedicated to Olympic lifting and strongman. We are adding a few platforms so you can clean, jerk, snatch and pull without the worry of being on the fourth floor. Note: there is no dropping of weights allowed upstairs, but downstairs is another story.
We are working out the logistics of the room now to see how we can set it up for maximum usage. The goal is to be able to have room to do barbell work and strongman in your own section. We are hoping to be able to get it set up so that tire flipping and farmer/yoke can be done indoors in all weather. Even snow! We are adding lights now, doing clean up and looking into heat for the space.
We hope to have this up and running right after you receive this newsletter.

We expect great lifting from our crew. Matt and Vincent will be there too. It is looking like it's going to be an awesome Saturday.

Muay Thai legend Rob Kaman will be at TPS on Sunday March 6th for a two hour Muay Thai seminar. You younger folks might not know who he is, but those who have been around a while will.
Kaman was a one man wrecking crew in the Muay Thai world in his day. We are honored to have him as a seminar presenter here at TPS.
When I (Murph) was running our kick boxing program, the TPS system was based on his methods. He is one of my all time favorite sports heroes. The Kaman system is a brutally effective. Rob is known for his unreal knockout power and surgical strikes.
We STRONGLY urge all of our Muay Thai students to attend this seminar. If you've never been to a TPS seminar this is a great first one to attend! Your Muay Thai skills will improve quickly from tips form The Dutchman.
Rob Kaman spent the better part of the last 15 years developing his own take on Dutch Kickboxing. Kaman 101 develops skills and reactions by building offensive and defensive counters off single attacks and counter building to multiple attacks and counters.
Emphasis is placed on using hands to set up kicks and vice-versa. Defensive countering is the primary focus as for so many years Muay Thai has been presented to America as “how to kick hard and how to knee hard.”
Rob has found very few people that understand how to effectively make solid defenses that leave the fighter balanced and prepared to make effective counter attacks.
This is the foundation of Kaman 101.
We expect this to be a sellout! Don't wait to register!
Cost is $89.00 per person and you do not need to be a member to attend.

January 2011
The New TPS is Open for Business!
TPS pulled it off again, and with short notice, too. With less than a month to get it done, we are now in our third location! This move went fast and could not have been done without the untiring help of my team, our members and friends, and our new landlord, Ed.
As you may know, TPS started in a very small location in 1999. We grew into our second location almost four years ago, and we are now in our third at 68 Vine Street in Everett!
The new location is four times the size of our Victoria Street location and is going to be known as the best gym (not health club, gym) in New England. The all-new TPS will continue to offer you everything that we are known for and more, so don't worry-we are not turning into the competition. We are adding more of the same equipment from EliteFTS (racks, benches, glute hams, etc.) , more dumbbells, TRX's, more platforms, indoor and outdoor Strongman equipment and much more. There is actually too much to list here! The new location also has full locker rooms with showers (the lockers are being shipped as we speak but are not here yet). We've even got an indoor Turf Area for pushing prowlers and dragging sleds as well as holding Group X classes.
I said above that this move happened in under a month and that is something to think about. This really should have taken at least three months or more to get done. The opportunity arose and needed to be acted upon or it would have gone away. So we did.
The one small catch is that the gym will look a little sparse at first. Getting new gym equipment and setting it up takes time. The lead-time on strength equipment is usually a month or more. Our vendors are coming through for us as fast as they can, but it's not all here yet. We will have new equipment arriving weekly, so don't despair when you come in. The gym will be fully stocked soon.
We began moving all of the gear out of Victoria Street on the 27th. It will all be in place and set up before next week is out. Once that is done, the new stuff will begin arriving. Anyone who has trained at TPS knows we like to rearrange the gym once we are in and get a feel for the floor plan. Don't be surprised if we make a few changes over the first few months.
We will also be updating the gym over the first few months, too. The previous tenant let it fall into a serious state of disrepair. We fixed as much as we could to make it safe and presentable in a short time. As we are not the previous tenant, we will continue to paint, fix things and make it better for you. We expect all the sprucing up to be done by the end of January.
I would like to take a second to thank everyone who helped out in the process. We had a core group of people who helped out on a daily basis: Russ, Steve-Director of Awesome, Tarik, Jane, Hollywood, Erica, Duane, Kevin, Drew, Linden, Trevor and Eddie were all there getting it done. We also had help from a bunch of other people as much as they could. Everyone who helped took time out of their hectic schedules during one of the busiest times of the year. I can't thank each and every one of you enough for all of your help. Without you this would not be a reality.
The only thing that is left is to get back to working out and continuing to be One of America's Twenty Best Gyms.
TPS Training Day
All right, the very first Training Day of 2011 and the very first one in the new gym is here-January 15th.
If you have never heard of Training Day or have not been to one, here's the scoop: This is an opportunity for you to train with a World Class group. The team of coaches at TPS all train together and once a month we open our group up to you.
This IS NOT A SEMINAR, it is a training session. Don't expect to get your ego coddled here, or get one on one attention. You will get a group of STRONG and EXPERIENCED coaches working out right Along with you, and you will benefit from having them spot you and give tips. You will also spot, load plates and lift too.
This is unquestionably one of the best was you will ever spend $20.00 on training. If you use powerlifting gear, lift RAW or even if you don't compete, this is the chance to learn how to perfect your form.
We will be squatting this time. We don't care if you squat an empty bar or 1100 pounds. All are welcome. Bring a great attitude and a willingness to lift and learn.
Lifting starts at 12:15, be ready and warmed up. No need to register, just tell the Front Desk you are here for Training Day and they'll get you going that day.
See you there.
TPS at the Everett Rec Center
TPS is proud to announce our new satellite location at the Everett Rec Center. We will begin the Northshore Fitcamp there on January 4th at 6:00 a.m. The first offering will be a Beginners’ Bootcamp with Jen Noyer of TPS running the show.
Beginners’ Bootcamp is ideal for those looking to get into shape after the holidays. It will be primarily focused on getting you more flexible and mobile. Jen will work on a series of exercise progressions using the foam roller, tennis balls and your body to get you moving freely, feeling better and losing pounds and inches.
We will also be offering a regular Bootcamp once the first beginners' camp is finished. The regular Bootcamp will be a much higher level of intensity! You WILL get in shape fast. These camps are very affordably priced and great for all fitness levels. Stay tuned to the Northshore Fitcamp page on the TPS site for all the details.
TPS is preparing two all-new seminars for 2011 right now and we are working on more!
As of right now we are working with the IKFF on a Body Weight Training seminar and certification through the prestigious IKFF. We are also finalizing the details on having John Brookfield, creator of the infamous "Battling Ropes" system come out the same weekend. This will make for an unbelievable two-day seminar.
I have also been speaking with our great friend, Vincent DiZenzo, and he will be coming back to TPS in 2011 for another seminar. This will most likely have Matt and Juliet as well. You never know, maybe we can talk Wendler into coming back up.
Once we have all the finer points ironed out, we will post the information on the "Upcoming Seminars" page. You will have the option of attending one or both of these exciting offerings. Of course there will be an early registration price and a discount for attending both. I say it all the time, but this one will be jammed full of people so register early. We will have to limit seating at these as we expect a very high turnout.
I expect to have all the details worked out in time for the February newsletter. Stay tuned!
Great New Book:
Rachel Cosgrove just wrote a new book on training women, The Fitness Professional’s Action guide to The Female Body Breakthrough. Rachel is known nationally as one of the country's premiere trainers of females. She has decided to share her incredible knowledge and insight with all of you.
Rachel and her husband Alwyn sent me an advance copy of the book and I was blown away. I was so impressed that it was immediately added to the required reading list for the TPS Intern program.
If you are a fitness professional, chances are that you train women. There is a pretty good chance too that you are a guy. This book will help you to learn how to communicate better with your female clientele. If you are a female trainer, you will get a TON of first class information from this book too. What if you are not a trainer, but a woman who is serious about working out? Get the book. It is full of proven training templates to help you achieve your goals.
To get the book, go to http://www.rachelcosgrove.com/store/
You won't be disappointed.
BIG MOVE UPDATE!
Here's the deal, things are coming along very nice over at Vine St.
We will be closed at the Victoria St. location PERMANENTLY on Dec. 23, 2010.
TPS will be closed Dec. 24, 25, 26 and will reopen at 68 Vine St. On Dec. 27 at 5:30 a.m.
The new gym hours will be:
Monday-Friday 5:30 a.m.-10:00 p.m
Saturday and Sunday 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
We will have a limited amount of equipment at Vine Street from the 27th-Jan. 1st. We will be moving all the equipment from Victoria St. on the 27th, so you'll be in good shape with plenty of stuff to get sweaty with by mid week.
We will have equipment coming in through mid January from a host of different vendors including EliteFTS, SpudInc., Perform Better, Pendlay, BFS, as well as 30 pieces of cardio equiment from a few different manufacturers.
As I have said before, please bear with us during the move. We will do our best to get all the equipment in as fast as possible, but it takes time to get it from the vendors. This move was done VERY fast and a lot of people say we can't get it done in time.
We can. We have a lot of help from our Team and our members. I can't think of too many businesses where the customers help them paint, clean and move. I would like to take a moment to THANK everyone who has helped us out so far. This would not be possible without you all.
TPS truly has the best members of any gym I have ever seen. They always come through!
Anyone who would like to help us out this weekend (Dec. 18&19) is welcome. We will be at Vine St. this Saturday and Sunday cleaning, painting, installing flooring, building walls and moving stuff around.
If you can help, email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and let him know.
You are not going to believe this, but it's for real. TPS is moving again!
We were just presented with an opportunity too good to pass up. We will be relocating right around the corner to 68 Vine Street in Everett at the end of the month.
This is the old Gold's/365/Rio location that is on Revere Beach Parkway. The actual entrance is 68 Vine Street, but you all know it as the gym on the parkway, right near the Harley Davidson dealer.
What does this mean for you our members?
It means that you will now have a 27,000 square foot gym with two floors, full locker rooms with showers, more equipment, more parking, more classes, more room to move around without feeling cramped, more options for personal training at a more affordable price (we will be offering semi-private group training now that we have the space), more cardio if that is what you want and more all at the SAME price!
This is a move we are not taking lightly and we will do it with as little interruption to your training as possible. Our goal is to be closed for a few days around Christmas when the gym is slow and then to open in the new location without a hitch. Of course there will be growing pains as we work out new systems to keep things running smoothly for you. Please bear with us during the move. As it stands right now we will only be closed for three days over Christmas ( the 24th-26th). This might change but we do not expect it too.
We will send an email with the final information on the move once we have it. We really love it here at Victoria Street and I would like to personally thank our landlord, Al Molatesta, for being so helpful to us over the years. We will miss him. Al is an AWESOME guy who helped us grow TPS from a 900 square foot location to the 7000 square foot location at Victoria Street. The sad truth is that for us to continue to serve our members, we have to move. It is just too crowded here now and it will only get worse in January.
With that said, we would love it if you have friends, co-workers or family that are looking for a gym, or are thinking about joining a gym to bring them to TPS. We offer a great referral program for our members. When you refer someone to TPS and they sign up for a membership ( 6 month EFT or 1 year Paid in Full) you get a free month. This is a win-win for all involved. You already know TPS is the best gym ever, referring a friend, co-worker or family member is a no-brainer. You get a free month on your membership which is awesome, and by referring us new members it helps us to keep costs down which saves you money in the long haul. Referrals allow us to spend less money on marketing and advertising which allows us to use that savings in ways that serve you, our members better.
We look forward to the best year ever in 2011 and we will do everything we can to make your training experience even better in our new location then it was in this one. Thanks for your patience and understanding in advance.

From Jen Noyer-New Classes and more!
TPS recognizes the importance of stretching and self-care. Nothing is worse than making progress, hitting new PR's working with your trainer and then hitting a roadblock due to an injury that could have been prevented from stretching. As athletes we need to listen to our bodies to pick up on those subtleties that signal the need to stretch, roll or implement some self-care to prevent injury. For that matter it helps when you work with your trainer to gain flexibility to get under the bar, sit back further in your squat and keep your form tight. Strength is great, but imagine strength and flexibility combined.
As such, we are offering some new benefits to our members. I can't tell you how many people I see come in, change up, put their items in a cubby and head to the back to lift WITHOUT any dynamic warm-up! To make matters worse, after their workouts clients grab their stuff and walk out WITHOUT stretching or rolling. Your workout is not finished after you rack the bar! After your workout, stretching should be just as important as your post-workout meal.
To that end, TPS will now offer a monthly class geared toward using what may become your closest friend at the gym, the foam roller. This class will demonstrate proper use of the foam roller to reduce muscular tension, demonstrating techniques as well as incorporating some basic static stretches designed to assist with muscle recovery. You get all this in a convenient 30 minute format. Don't have a roller? Not to worry, we have some here and also will tell you where to buy them so you can roll to her hearts content in front of the TV at home. Keep an eye out for this new offering at the gym and check for times! I am very excited to share with you this great new opportunity in the stretching arena (and yes I may be a bit biased).
In addition to one-on-one personal training sessions TPS now offers One-on-One Stretching/Self-care sessions with yours truly.
Are you restricted in your lifts due to tight hips? Do you feel low back tension after sitting at the office all day? Whatever concerns you have, we will work together to chase them down and regain your flexibility. This is the perfect opportunity to voice your hopes, wishes and aspirations for a more flexible you. You will need to complete a health history intake form prior to your first session. During these one-on-one sessions we will work to create a personalized program designed to work towards your personal goals whether in daily life, at the gym or with lift specific stretches.
Sessions may include variations of yoga stretches, incorporate foam rollers, the back-knobber or other self-care props all designed to target your tension and increase flexibility. Feel free to grab me if you have questions or would like to understand the personal benefits to you. Please check with the front desk for more information and rates.
Chair Massage will be making its debut in November.
Here is the chance to work on some trigger point release for those nagging knots in your back that you just can't reach.
Massage sessions can be great to reduce overall tightness or a quick, intense way to work out some knots that might be limiting your range. If you prefer more of a relaxation component we can change it up to calm the muscles. In addition to back work we can incorporate hips, arms, legs and neck. Pre or post-workout massage is all good. I'll bring in the massage chair and you can have a seat and chill.
This service is an additional cost to members at $1 per minute; payment accepted at the front desk.
The sign up sheet will be located at the front desk. Feel free to sign up in advance for a time slot so you don't have to hang around and wait. I look forward to seeing many of you and getting to know those members I have not yet had the pleasure to meet.
As a reminder you can always try out a yoga or pilates class during the week, no experience needed. Group class schedule is at the front desk!
Training Day:
Saturday November 13th is the next TPS Training Day. We will be BENCHING BIG this time on the brand new Metal Militia Thug bench we just got from Bill Crawford of the MM. Come on down to TPS for a great day of lifting. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you haven't been to one of these, you are missing out. Training days are the BEST way to for you to get a ton of knowledge and experience with a great group of lifters. Be here at 12:00 noon for day of benching. Bring your shirt too if you need help in tweaking your competitive bench. No shirt, no problem. We can get you up to speed on raw benching too. Who knows, maybe 405 raw will fall for Steve this time.
New Classes
We are looking to expand our Group X class schedule to better serve our members. We have had a lot of interest in a Friday Gutts and Butts class, as well as expanded Yoga and Pilates. We are also looking at a few new ones.
I am currently in the process of adding a new class on Restorative Techniques and Mobility with Jen Noyer as the instructor. This class will focus on foam rolling, self myofascial release, trigger points and flexibility/mobility. The curriculum is underway and will be announced soon.
Toys For Tots Drive:
It's almost the most wonderful time of the year and you know what that means, some kids won't get any presents. Well, not if TPS and you our members can help it!
As we have always done, we will be running a Toys for Tots drive again this year. If you can afford it please bring in a new, unwrapped toy and leave it in the box and we will have them picked up and distributed by the USMC to needy local families.
We'll be adding a twist this year too! We will be running FREE Saturday Boot Camps soon. What's the catch, there is always a catch. It's really not free. We would appreciate it if you could bring in a toy f or the Toys for Tots drive.
If you can't bring in a toy, we will still let you take the Boot Camp class. It would be great if you could so open up your wallet and your heart and help a kid have a great Christmas this year.
TPS/ Boston Crossfit Strongman Seminar
TPS was invited to work with Boston Crossfit last month for a Strongman Seminar. The host, Neal, form Boston Crossfit was first class. The facility is located in a pretty rough section of Boston. The people there were not so rough, they were pretty hardcore though.
We began the day with an hour lecture on the types of Strongman events, safety, how to do them and how to incorporate them into the Crossfit WOD's. We then moved on to the practical portion. LEt me tell you, the people there came to work!
"Hollywood" Matt Murphy, Ross "Pudding Pop" Martin, Kevin "too muscular for A.R.T., and Murph put everyone through the events and by the day's end, everyone looked pretty darned good at doing them.
Big News:
Effective immediately, CJ Murphy (Murph) of TPS is now accepting new training clients and small groups for coaching. This is the first time in a long time that this opportunity has presented itself to our clients.

New Camp?
TPS is taking interest in a new training camps. The first offering has been tentatively named by Steve. The working title is "Dude Camp". That may or may not change. It could change to "Gettin' Awesome with Steve Camp". We'll keep you posted on that. Anyway, "Dude Camp" will be a morning training group for, you guessed it, dudes. Most guys want to be more awesome but don't know how. Steve knows how to get Awesome. Steve was not awesome when he came to TPS, but he is now. He can teach you to be more awesome.
Getting awesome revolves around being strong and jacked, two things that Steve is all about. If you would like to be more awesome, reply

We'll make it happen.
"Dude Camp" will be offered at one of the following times: 9:00 am or possibly 10:00 am. Let us know which time is best for you to get awesome with Steve.
The other camp we are considering is a Women's Morning Training Group similar to our Boot Camp Fitness Series, with a kick. You'll get the same great workout as the night camps, but with an emphasis on doing more work in less time to burn more fat. This will make the ladies more awesome too.
We don't have an awesome name for this one yet and we are taking suggestions. The Women's camp will be an early morning camp, just around the time the kids are dropped off at school. Perfect for moms.
Both camps will have a different pricing structure than our evening camps. They will be ongoing, instead of running in eight week blocks, and will be billed on a monthly rate. We are finalizing rock bottom pricing on these to give you the best training at the lowest possible price. Remember, TPS is 100% committed to making you more awesome at the best value.
Kettlebell Prices Slashed!
